Orascom Telecom Algérie SpA reported earnings and operating results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported revenues of $429,160,000 against $433,751,000 a year ago. EBITDA was $246,464,000 against $256,608,000 a year ago. Capex was $60,362,000 against $19,110,000 a year ago. revenue decreased 2% year on year in local currency, as a result of the strong competition following the launch of 3G services by other operators, lower outgoing traffic, and lower interconnect revenue due to the new interconnect lower interconnect rates and the increase in multi SIM cards. EBITDA decreased 5% year on year in local currency, negatively impacted by higher network and IT costs as well as an increase in structural OPEX. CAPEX surged year on year mainly due to the investments in the high- speed 3G network, following the lifting of the ban on 3G equipment in December 2013.
The company grew its mobile customer base 6% year on year to 17.6 million.

Global Telecom Holding announced that Mr. Philip Tohmé, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of VimpelCom Ltd., has been appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Orascom Telecom Algerie (OTA). Mr. Vincenzo Nesci will continue his role in Algeria as OTA's Chairman. Mr. Tohmé has held different positions within the VimpelCom group, where he has acquired unique operational experience and has proven leadership and organizational management qualities. Mr. Tohmé was the CTO of VimpelCom Ltd. from 2011 and the CTO of GTH in 2010.
Orascom Telecom Algerie Gets 3G License in Algeria

Global Telecom Holding S.A.E. announced that its Algerian subsidiary Orascom Telecom Algerie (OTA) has been awarded one of the three provisional 3G licenses offered in Algeria. Final licenses with the relevant coverage obligations are expected to be granted after payment of fees, satisfaction of the conditions indicated in the tender documents and receipt of clearances and approvals from various governmental authorities. The 3G license will cost DZD 3 billion (approximately USD 40 million) and will be valid for 15 years, after which successive renewals will be in five year fixed terms. OTA received an exceptional approval from the Bank of Algeria allowing OTA to make foreign payments to acquire equipment exclusively dedicated to 3G technologies. This exception is a conditioned derogation to the current ban on foreign payments.
