Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. Key Developments

BSNL to Establish Engineering Training Institute

Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) has begun work to set-up a technical university to offer engineering and management courses. The company will approach the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) for formal approval within eight months. BSNL said it campus will have the capacity to train 1,500 to 3,000 students at one time but the company did not share the number of seats at its technical institute. The company also plans to add courses on cyber security.

Government Of India May Sell BSNL's Assets

Government of India may hive off Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.'s (BSNL) optical fibre network into a new unit. This includes the company's land and tower assets. The Government is hoping that the business opportunity for BSNL will change by hiving off the assets into a separate unit. For example, it is looking to offer an equity stake to private players in the tower asset unit. However, the opposition to this move is coming from the employees union, which has threatened to go on an immediate strike if any decision is taken without discussion.

MTNL ANd BSNL May Get Merged

The workers of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will resort to immediate indefinite strike if the Government decides to merge BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL). The forum of BSNL unions /associations, which is the co-coordinating committee of the unions/associations of non executives and executives in BSNL, at its meeting held on March 3, 2014, strongly opposed the move on grounds that it will seriously and adversely affect the future of BSNL and its workforce. V A N Namboodiri, Convener Forum, “It is reported that the Government is proposing to take decision on these matters urgently and hastily before the declaration of the general decisions, even without giving the unions/associations a chance to be heard. The workers are, naturally, very much restive and agitated about their future as well as the future of BSNL”.
