Telefónica Reportedly To Acquire Iusacell

Telefónica, S.A. (CATS:TEF) is in talks to acquire Grupo Iusacell, S.A. de C.V., according to media reports. Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg and El Economista reported that Telefonica was in talks with Grupo Salinas and Grupo Televisa, S.A.B. (NYSE:TV), which co-own Iusacell. Telefonica is being advised by Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria and Lazard, the sources added. Telefonica, Televisa and Grupo Salinas all declined to comment on the reports.

Telefonica Said To Seek Partner In Mexico To Challenge Slim

Telefónica, S.A. (CATS:TEF) has approached potential acquisition targets and partners in Mexico, where it’s seeking to challenge billionaire Carlos Slim’s dominance, according to three people familiar with the matter. Telefónica group has held discussions with companies including Grupo Iusacell, S.A. de C.V. and Grupo Televisa, S.A.B. (NYSE:TV), said the people, asking not to be named because the deliberations are private. Banco Santander, S.A. (CATS:SAN) and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, S.A. (CATS:BBVA) are working with Telefonica, said another person familiar with the matter.
