Third Point LLC has hired Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse AG, and JPMorgan Chase & Co banks for an initial public offering of its reinsurer business that could raise around $250 million in later 2013, according to three sources familiar with the matter. According to Reuters, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, and Credit Suisse declined to comment and Third Point could not be reached for comment.
Third Point LLC is pressurizing Murphy Oil Corporation to sell Canadian and US retail, natural gas and oil sands assets. On October 3, 2012, Third Point said, "Murphy's annual production could grow at a 14% annual rate from 2012 to 2015, with oil and oil-indexed gas making up over 85% of the production mix." On October 4, 2012, Murphy responded, "As part of this dialogue, [Murphy] recently met with a number of investors including Third Point. Third Point and other investors have made a variety of suggestions with regard to the company’s portfolio and the company values their input." Claiborne Deming, Chairman of Murphy said that the company has been working to illuminate the value in our stock price for the benefit of all of our shareholders.
Abercrombie & Fitch Co. has appointed Goldman Sachs Group Inc. as an advisor, as investors wagered that it may put Abercrombie up for sale, sources told The Post. It wasn't immediately clear whether an auction is planned. Mike Jeffries, Chief Executive Officer of Abercrombie, has been under fire from big shareholders, including a hedge fund headed by Ralph Whitworth. Shares of Abercrombie rose 5.4% and closed at $37.92, up $1.95 on September 12, 2012, on the news. In afternoon shares rose 7.8% after CNBC reported that Abercrombie had hired Goldman. Third Point LLC had amassed a 2% Abercrombie's stake earlier in 2012, seems to have sold off his stake in Abercrombie. Ralph Whitworth and Abercrombie officials didn't respond to requests for comment and Goldman representative declined to comment, The New York Post reported.
