Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Hachette Livre, and Verlagsgruppe Georg Von Holzbrinck Agree to Terminate Agency Agreements with Price Restrictions

Four big e-book publishers and Apple have pledged to end agreements that the European Union suspects aimed to drive up prices. The four publishers are Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Hachette Livre, and Verlagsgruppe Georg Von Holzbrinck. The four had been accused of colluding to fix prices, in breach of EU antitrust rules, instead of competing with online retailers such as Amazon. The publishers had now agreed to terminate agency agreements with price restrictions and 'give retailers freedom to discount e-books, subject to certain conditions, during a two-year period'.
