Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) is considering the sale of retail-banking business in Japan, according to people familiar with the matter. Multiple major banks have expressed an interest, and an auction will be held as early as September 2014. Citibank Japan Ltd. noted Wednesday on its website that media reports of a potential sale were not based on any announcement made by Citibank Japan, and continued operations as usual.

Citibank Japan Ltd. announced that it appointed Gerald Keefe as executive officer and head of the corporate banking division, effective Jan. 1, 2014. Keefe is currently head of banking and origination in the global securitized products group of the parent company, Citigroup Inc. Marc Merlino, the previous head of the corporate banking division, in September became the global head of Citigroup's global subsidiaries group. Katsuhisa Ishikawa will continue to serve as interim head of the corporate banking division until Keefe takes over.

For the period, the company reported net loss of ¥2,340 million, ordinary loss of ¥2,808 million loss before income taxes of ¥3,268 million and ordinary income was ¥47,432 million compared to net income of ¥1,248 million, ordinary profit of ¥4,158 million, income before income taxes of ¥4,097 million and ordinary income was ¥58,039 million for the same period a year ago.
