Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. (TSE:8316) is set to announce an agreement to acquire Japanese unit of Citigroup, Inc. (NYSE:C), people with knowledge of the matter said. Japanese unit will be purchased from Citibank Japan Ltd. for about ¥40 billion, said the people, who asked not to be named as the discussions are private.

Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) is considering the sale of retail-banking business in Japan, according to people familiar with the matter. Multiple major banks have expressed an interest, and an auction will be held as early as September 2014. Citibank Japan Ltd. noted Wednesday on its website that media reports of a potential sale were not based on any announcement made by Citibank Japan, and continued operations as usual.
