A class action lawsuit alleges Blue Shield of California is violating state law by denying claims for reconstructive surgery. The lawsuit claims California law requires health plans to cover reconstructive cosmetic surgery if the surgery returns a patient who suffers a disfigurement or deformity to normal appearance. The lawsuit alleges California Physicians' Service, which does business as Blue Shield of California, denies claims for such surgeries on the basis that they are not medically necessary if they do not resolve a significant functional problem. The complaint claims state law requires decisions regarding whether surgery would return a patient to normal appearance to be made by a reconstructive surgeon. The lawsuit was filed by a woman who was denied coverage for a mammoplasty and a blepharoplasty.

Blue Shield of California announced it has renewed its agreement with Healthways to continue offering the award-winning SilverSneakers(R) Fitness Program to eligible members in California. The renewal follows a recent announcement that Blue Shield has agreed to provide Healthways MeYou Health-branded social well-being improvement solutions to support their Wellvolution health and wellness program. SilverSneakers, the nation's leading exercise program designed exclusively for older adults, has been available to members of select Blue Shield of California plans since 2009. With this extension, members of eligible Blue Shield of California Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans will continue to enjoy the benefits of the SilverSneakers program. The effectiveness of the program is evidenced through Blue Shield of California and SilverSneakers member surveys.
Blue Shield of California Appoints Melissa Welch as Vice President for Clinical Sales and Innovation Support

Melissa Welch, MD, MPH, has joined Blue Shield of California as vice president for clinical sales and innovation support. Welch will lead a team of medical directors and other staff supporting Blue Shield’s Markets division.
