Woman Sues Kanebo Cosmetics Inc. for White Blotches

A 41-year-old woman who has suffered white blotches on her skin since using a Kanebo Cosmetics Inc. product has sued the company for a total of 48 million yen. The lawsuit, filed with Tokyo District Court, is believed to be the first among a number of women who have experienced white blotches on skin after using skin-whitening products made by the Japanese cosmetics company. According to her written complaint the Tokyo woman started using a product containing Rhododenol, a skin brightening ingredient developed by Kanebo, in July 2011. Around September of the same year, she began developing a number of symptoms, such as itchy skin and white blotches on her face, neck and arms. The woman is demanding compensation based on the product liability law and other legal provisions. She argues the symptoms could have been prevented from worsening if Kanebo had recalled the products or given warnings sooner. She still has the white blotches on her skin, also according the complaint. The company has already started paying the medical expenses of some victims, as well as compensation based on symptoms and the length of time required for recovery.
