mitsubishi electric corp (6503) Key Developments

Mitsubishi Electric and Tohoku University Develop 5GHz/60GHz Dual-Band Receiver Front-End Si-CMOS IC for Wireless Communication

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Tohoku University announced their development of a 5GHz/60GHz dual-band receiver RF front-end Si-CMOS IC for a highly dependable and high-speed wireless communication system that Tohoku University has proposed as the Dependable Air. Technical details of new Si-CMOS IC will be announced during European Microwave Week 2014 from 5-10 October 2014. Wireless communication is dependent on high dependability and high speed. But since high-speed wireless communication normally uses millimeter-scale radio waves, communication can be established only in line of sight. In the 5GHz band used for wireless LANs, however, communication is possible over the horizon. Tohoku University is proposing its Dependable Air with wireless handsets that use multiple standards (heterogeneous) to conduct seamless handovers according on the environment. Mitsubishi Electric's new RF front-end IC is a miniaturized multiband model that uses the 5GHz and 60GHz bands. Size was reduced about 30% by sharing parts of the 5GHz and 60GHz RF front-ends. Mitsubishi Electric also reduced the extent of trial IC manufacturing by introducing electro-magnetic simulation of performance effects in millimeter-wave bands for assembled ICs. Going forward, Mitsubishi Electric plans to pursue standardization of this wireless communication, including IEEE802.11 and other standards, as well as develop RF-IC business for millimeter-wave communication devices.

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation Opens Escalators and Elevators QM Center

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation announced that it has completed its Elevators and Escalators QM (Quality & Manufacturing) center to develop and test global models while nurturing related personnel skills and know-how. The facility, located at the company's Inazawa Works in Aichi Prefecture, Japan will begin operating commercially on October 1, 2014. Development and verification operations at the center will enhance the quality and safety of key parts, including hoisting machines, printed circuit assemblies, ropes and brakes. The center will evaluate total systems, including fluctuating manufacturing conditions due to purchases and other factors, and individual parts using simulated operating environments. Expected benefits include strengthened effectiveness and efficiency of trial manufacturing and verification operations, and accelerated lifecycle testing of products subjected to inhospitable conditions, such as varying temperatures and humidity, taking climate change into account. Verification of marginal performance will enable clearer articulation of the relationship between marginal performance and usage conditions and operating environments.

Intel and Mitsubishi Electric Collaborate to Create Next-Generation Factory Automation Systems

Intel Corporation and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation announced a new collaboration to develop next-generation factory automation (FA) systems with Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and a pilot program at Intel's backend manufacturing facility in Malaysia. The pilot demonstrates the benefits of IoT in a factory setting with a focus on delivering productivity enhancement through innovative functions, such as predictive failure, by combining Intel's expertise developing solutions for IoT and Mitsubishi Electric's e-F@ctory automation capabilities. Intel realized a savings of USD 9 million over the course of the pilot. As an initial collaboration, Intel and Mitsubishi Electric implemented the IoT and big data solution at Intel's backend manufacturing facility in Malaysia. Using an Intel Atom processor-based IoT gateway called the C Controller from Mitsubishi Electric's iQ-Platform, Intel was able to securely gather and aggregate data for the analytics server. Data was then processed using Revolution R Enterprise software from Revolution Analytics, an analytics software solution that uses the open source R statistics language, which was hosted on Cloudera Enterprise, the foundation of an enterprise data hub. The solution has improved equipment component uptime, increased yield and productivity by minimizing misclassification of good units as bad, enabled predictive maintenance, and reduced component failures. Initial results include a savings of USD 9 million through cost avoidance and improved decision making. The commercialization date for the product is 2015, and the companies will show a live demonstration of the solution in Intel's booth at the IoT Japan 2014 tradeshow, which will be held October 15 to 17 at Tokyo Big Sight in Japan.
