Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha provides ocean, land, and air transportation services in Japan, North America, Europe, Asia, and internationally. It offers various logistics services, including liner trade service comprising container shipping; terminal and harbor transportation; and air cargo transportation services. The company also engages in the bulk shipping business consisting of cars transportation, car terminals development, and inland transportation networks construction; dry bulk transportation of natural resources, such as iron ore, coal, and wood-chips; tanker transportation service for petroleum companies, petrochemical companies, and energy companies; and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transportation, as well as the operation of the oceanographic research vessel and deep-sea drilling vessel. In addition, it owns and operates luxury-class cruise ships; and manages commercial and residential buildings, as well as is involved in the research and development to improve ship-operating technologies and logistics solutions. As of March 31, 2013, it operated a fleet of 846 vessels, including 161 handysize bulk carriers, 144 containerships, 126 capesize bulk carriers, 120 car carriers, 102 panamax bulk carriers, 82 tankers, 51 wood chip carriers, 29 other vessels, 28 LNG carriers, 18 heavy load carriers, and 3 cruise ships. Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Reaches Time Charter Agreements for Eight New Containerships

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki has reached time charter agreements for eight new containerships, each capable of carrying 14,000 TEUs. These vessels will be built at the Kure shipyard of Japan Marine United Co. Ltd. These ships, which will be delivered from February 2016 through January 2018, will have improved fuel efficiency and cargo loadability among today's container ships of similar size. After delivery, the vessels will be put into service in Asia and Europe as replacements for existing ships, including four 13,000 TEU vessels chartered from Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL).

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha Concludes Long-Term Charter Contract for Tokyo Gas LNG Transportation

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha and Tokyo LNG Tanker Co. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas Co. Ltd., agreed to a 20-year contract for the charter and joint ownership of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier. NYK also concluded a contract with Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU) for construction of the LNG carrier, which will have a cargo tank capacity of 165,000 cubic meters. At present, NYK and Tokyo LNG Tanker jointly own two LNG carriers. The newly built vessel will be the third operated under joint ownership by the two companies. Upon completion of shipbuilding in 2017, the ship will be mainly used for LNG transportation from the Cove Point LNG project in the United States. The new LNG carrier will employ the self-supporting prismatic-shaped IMO type-B (SPB) design developed by the IHI Corporation and JMU. The SPB design features a precise analysis of structural strength and fatigue integrity, together with a quality-control process that ensures complete machining accuracy and welding and thus results in a very safe vessel having an extremely high structural reliability. Moreover, the carrier will have a structural advantage in that most of the tank will be fitted inside the hull, allowing favorable front views from the vessel’s bridge as well as reduced wind resistance. In addition, to comply with environmental regulations for vessel operations along the U.S. coast2 the new LNG carrier will be equipped with a tri-fuel diesel electric propulsion system3 that can use low-sulfur fuel oil, in addition to a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system.4 Moreover, insulating materials will be installed in the carrier to suppress the boil-off rate5 in the cargo tank to 0.08% of tank volume per day, the world’s lowest level. The new carrier will have superior fuel-efficiency and mitigate environmental burdens.

For the period, the company reported revenues of JPY 1,654,354 million against JPY 1,406,451 million a year ago. Operating income was JPY 35,759 million against JPY 15,760 million a year ago. Net income was JPY 28,385 million against JPY 3,172 million a year ago. Net income per share was JPY 16.73 against JPY 1.87 a year ago. Recurring profit was JPY 50,358 million against JPY 15,319 million a year ago.
