Alps Electric Launches the Automotive 4G LTE Communication Module

Alps Electric Co. Ltd. has launched the automotive 4G LTE high-speed data communication module, the UMDZ series, with dimensions of 28.90 -- 29.80 -- 4.22 mm. Powered by Marvell's ARMADA® Mobile PXA1801 multi-mode 4G LTE modem, the Alps Electric UMDZ Series module supports 2G, 3G and 4G LTE communication protocols and worldwide deployment including Europe, North America, China and Japan. The ARMADA Mobile PXA1801 supports Category 4 data rates, achieving throughputs of up to 150 megabits-per-second (Mbps) on the downlink and 50Mbps on the uplink. The modem's flexible and efficient architecture allows fast implementation of reliable, secure and cost-effective data communication devices for automotive, smart meters, machine-to-machine, digital signage and other emerging applications. Combined with Marvell's PXA1801 4G LTE modem, the Alps' UMDZ communication module also features Marvell's PMIC components and 88RF858 RF transceiver. Automotive manufacturers are increasingly seeking technology that links high-speed data communication in vehicles to the outside world. By utilizing Alps Electric's advanced communication module, automotive manufacturers can perform key functions of in-vehicle navigation systems including map updates, destination and traffic information, as well as offer high-speed data for in-vehicle entertainment, cloud and big data services, eCall, and general Internet access. For the year, the company expects net sales of $710,000 million, operating income of $41,000 million, ordinary income of $39,500 million, net income of $24,500 million and basic earnings per share of $136.68 million compared to the previous guidance of net sales of $685,000 million, operating income of $31,000 million, ordinary income of $29,000 million, net income of $17,000 million and basic earnings per share of $94.84 million.

Alps Electric Develops and Commences Mass Production of SKTG Series Side Push Tact Switch

Alps Electric has developed the SKTG Series Side Push TACT Switch (PC Board Cut-Off Type) (IP67-rated), ideal for embedding in smart phones and other mobile devices. Mass production is already underway. Responding to the market needs, Alps Electric has developed and commenced mass production of the SKTG Series Side Push TACT Switch (PC Board Cut-Off Type). Because the SKTG Series is designed to be mounted into a PC cut-out, it has an even lower profile than the existing SKTD Series, achieving a switch height above the PC board of 0.85 mm, around 45% smaller than the existing model. This contributes to ongoing size and thickness reductions of end products. The SKTG Series uses a PC board cut-off format, whereby the switch is mounted into a cut-out in the board. This format does not require a flexible or sub PC board for connecting the switch and board and thus contributes to cost reductions in end product design. Optimizing the design and composition of the various parts using mechanical design and material technology built up by Alps Electric over many years has also helped to ensure strength when mounted. Operating life, which tends to deteriorate with size and height reductions, was secured through optimization of the metal contacts using analysis technology. An operating life of 200,000 cycles was thus realized despite compact dimensions of 3.7 × 3.5 mm. Furthermore, use of a sealed contact structure realizes IP67 dust and water resistance. Features: side Push TACT Switch (PC Board Cut-Off Type) contributing to thinner electronic devices Mounting in a PC board cut-out realizes a height of 0.85 mm above the board Mounting in a PC board cut-out improves solder peel strength Metal contact optimization enables a 200,000-cycle life despite compact dimensions sealed contact structure ensures a highly reliable switch (IP67 dust and water resistance); principal applications: smart phones, tablets, other mobile devices, cameras and wearable electronics. Planned release: mass production from October 2014; sample price is ¥60 (incl. tax), planned monthly production is 3 million units (April 2015).
