American Airlines Reportedly Retains Rothschild To Advise On Alliance With Japan Airlines

A person familiar with the matter said that AMR Corporation’s American Airlines Inc. has retained Rothschild and Global Advisory Japan, to advise it on a move to forge a closer alliance with Japan Airlines Corp. The person added that this may involve American Airlines buying a small stake in Japan Airlines. Weber Shandwick said that it is also working on the project. Dow Jones reported that AMR could not be immediately reached for comment. Another person familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal earlier that Gerard Arpey, AMR's chairman and chief executive, was in Tokyo last week and more executives are slated to arrive in coming weeks. In September, AMR's chief financial officer, Tom Horton said that AMR has been talking with Japan Airlines “for some time” about forming a closer relationship, but declined to comment on the precise nature of the talks. Delta Air Lines Inc. has hired Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Fleishman-Hillard to advise it on its own efforts to form an alliance with Japan Airlines, according to people familiar with the matter.

The company said in a letter to employees it would 'resize and reshape' its M&E operation to better meet the needs of its smaller fleet. The 700 job cuts represent about 5% of AMR's 12,700 M&E employees systemwide.
