Emerson Electric Co., a diversified global technology company, engages in designing and supplying product technology and delivering engineering services to various industrial and commercial, and consumer markets worldwide. The company operates through five segments: Process Management, Industrial Automation, Network Power, Climate Technologies, and Appliance and Tools. The Process Management segment offers product technology, as well as engineering and project management services for precision control, monitoring, and asset optimization of plants that produce power, or that process or treat items, such as oil, natural gas, and petrochemicals; food and beverages; pulp and paper; pharmaceuticals; and municipal water supplies. The Industrial Automation segment provides integrated manufacturing solutions to the manufacturers of products, including motors, transmissions, alternators, fluid controls, and materials joining equipment. The Network Power segment designs, manufactures, installs, and maintains products providing ‘grid to chip’ electric power conditioning, power reliability, and environmental control for telecommunications networks, data centers, and other critical applications. This segment offers power systems, embedded power supplies, precision cooling, and inbound power systems. The Climate Technologies segment provides products and services for areas of the climate control industry, including residential, commercial, and industrial heating and air-conditioning, and commercial refrigeration. Its technology enables homeowners and businesses to manage their heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems; and digitally controls and remotely monitors refrigeration units in grocery stores and other food distribution outlets. The Appliance and Tools segment offers products and solutions in motors, appliances and components, and tools and storage. The company was founded in 1890 and is based in St. Louis, Missouri.

Emerson Electric Co. has introduced the Liebert XDR. Throughout the past year, a version of the product was used exclusively by Sun Microsystems as the SCD5600. The product is now available globally. The Liebert XDR microchannel heat exchangers are mounted in a moveable door, which is fixed to a frame attached to the rear of the rack. It relies on server fans for hot air movement across a cooling coil, utilizing a pumped refrigerant that is 700% more efficient at removing heat than water. The pumped refrigerant also eliminates any danger of equipment damage from water leakage. Air exits the Liebert XDR at approximately the same temperature as the air entering the front of the rack, neutralizing the heat created by the servers. Able to accommodate both new and existing racks, the Liebert XDR is designed to cool up to 20 kW of rack load, even in environments that may not be arranged in a hot aisle/cold aisle configuration. The sleek construction of the Liebert XDR allows the entire cooling unit to be less than six inches deep. The door opens more than 100 degrees, for full access to the internal servers and other equipment, and allows for side-by-side placement of racks in open and closed positions.
On November 3, 2009, the Board of Directors of Emerson Electric Co. adopted amendments to the company's bylaws, effective November 3, 2009. Article III, Section 3, which provided that no Director is permitted to stand for election or re-election to the Board after reaching the age of 72, has been amended to allow Rozanne L. Ridgway and Vernon R. Loucks, Jr. to serve as members of the company's board of directors for one additional year, until the Annual Meeting of Stockholders to be held in February 2011.
