Safaricom Limited, together with its subsidiaries, provides mobile phone, fixed line wireless telecommunication, Internet, and data services in Kenya. It offers prepay services, which include international dialing, voice mail, prepay roaming, customer care access, tariff migration, loyalty scheme, travel and roaming, and directory and information; postpay services; and data and messaging services, such as short messaging services (SMS), email, multimedia, call waiting/holding, and security 911, as well as updates for news, sports, and entertainment. The company also provides M-PESA, a service that allows customers to transfer money using a mobile phone; premium rate services that offer recorded information or live conversation for callers; and loyalty schemes. In addition, it offers various other services, such as voice SMS and mobile advertising; missed call alert, a service that enables subscribers to know their missed calls even when their handset is not in use; SIMEX, an over-the-air service that allows subscribers to replace their SIM cards; pre-paid roaming top-up, a service that enables Safaricom subscribers to top-up with company partners while roaming in eastern Africa; and 3G network services. Further, the company operates retail outlets that offer phones, SIM cards and information brochures, laptops, 3G enabled devices, and accessories in Thika, Meru, Eldoret, Kitale, Kisii, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Nairobi in Kenya. Safaricom Limited provides its products and services through retail centers and distributors. As of March 31, 2009, it operated 500 retail outlets. The company was incorporated in 1997 and is based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Safaricom Limited reported earnings results for the half year ended September 30, 2009. The company's pre-tax profit for the period rose 1.7% against a competitive environment and dwindling average revenue per user (ARPU). The company's pre-tax profit grew from KES 8.9 billion recorded over a similar period in 2008 to reach KES 9.1 billion. The company grew its income by 17.8% from KES 34.5 billion the same period last year to KES 40.6 billion in which voice calls contributed 77.6%. Revenue from voice increased by 6.2% from KES 29.7 billion to KES 31.5 billion.
Safaricom Limited planned KES 12 billion bond should launch in two weeks. Kenyan government and corporate debt is attracting a lot of local and foreign investor interest, Joseph said, due to attractive yields and the introduction of electronic trading on the bond market.
ZTE Corp. and Safaricom Limited jointly launched the first solar-powered mobile phone in Kenya. The handset, called the Simu ya Solar, is manufactured from recycled materials and has a built-in solar panel that charges the phone using the sun's rays. The launch of the handset will help Safaricom meet the needs of rural residents who have no direct access to electricity and have had to pay for charging services. The price of the handset will be about $39.
