Southern Company, together with its subsidiaries, operates as an energy company serving across the southeastern United States. It generates, transmits, and distributes electricity through coal, nuclear, oil and gas, and hydro resources to utilities, electric cooperatives, and municipalities in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and the Carolinas. The company serves approximately 4.4 million customers with 42,000 megawatts of generating capacity. Its transmission assets include approximately 27,000 miles of transmission lines and 3,400 substations. The company also operates as a regional wireless carrier in Alabama, Georgia, southeastern Mississippi, and northwest Florida, which bundles multiple communication options into one phone, including push to talk, cellular service, text messaging, wireless Internet access, and wireless data. In addition, Southern Company provides long-haul and metropolitan dark fiber, as well as network elements, such as rights of way, dark fiber, conduit, co-location, and other related maintenance services. The company was founded in 1945 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

Southern Company reported consolidated earnings results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2009. For the quarter, the company has posted net earnings of $790.0 million, or $0.99 diluted per share, compared with $780.4 million $1.01 diluted per share, in the same period a year ago. Revenues for the third quarter were $4.68 billion, compared with $5.43 billion in the same period a year ago, a 13.7% decrease. Operating income $1,415 million compared to $1,405 million for the same period a year ago. EBIT was $1,243 million compared to $1,232 million for the same period a year ago. For the nine months ended Sept. 30, the company's net earnings were $1.39 billion, or $1.77 a share, compared with $1.56 billion, or $2.02 a share, for the same period a year ago. For the first nine months of the year, revenues totaled $12.23 billion, compared with $13.32 billion in the same period a year ago, a decrease of 8.2%. Operating income was $2,791 million compared to $3,037 million in the same period a year ago. EBIT was $2,272 million compared to $2,443 million for the same period a year ago.
