Its portfolio of media properties includes daily and community newspapers; and the Washington-based Scripps Media Center, home to the Scripps Howard News Service, a supplemental wire service covering stories in the capital, other parts of the United States, and internationally. The company also operates Internet sites offering users information, news, advertising, e-commerce, and other online services. It engages in the operation of 10 television stations comprising 6 ABC-affiliated stations, 3 NBC-affiliated stations, and 1 independent station. In addition, the company involves in the licensing and syndication of news features and comics. The E. W. Scripps Company was founded in 1878 and is based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The E. W. Scripps Company reported consolidated earnings results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2009. The E. W. Scripps Company reported capital expenditures in the third quarter of 2009 of approximately $16 million bringing the nine-month figure to $40 million which is down from $62 million last year. The company predicts full year 2009 capital expenditure figure to come in around $45 million.
