Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. announced that USFDA has granted approval for an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) of its subsidiary for generic Acular ®, Ketorolac Tromethamine Ophthalmic Solution, 0.5%. This Ketorolac Tromethamine Ophthalmic Solution is therapeutically equivalent to Acular® Ophthalmic Solution, 0.5%, of Allergan Inc. Ketorolac Tromethamine Ophthalmic Solution has annual sales of approximately USD 40 million in the US. Ketorolac Tromethamine Ophthalmic Solution is indicated for the temporary relief of ocular itching due to seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. This is also used in the treatment of post operative inflammation in patients who have undergone cataract extraction.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. reported earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended September 30, 2009. The company's sales for the three months ending 30 September 2009 stood at $254 million; a flat year-on-year growth rate. Operating and net profits dipped by 19.6% and 11.5% year on year respectively. The decline in sales is primarily related to the U.S. FDA's manufacturing ban still in effect on U.S. subsidiary Caraco Pharma's Michigan facility. In line with this, bottomlines have also fallen, with the U.S. firm also keeping a reserve of $15.9 billion for the seized products that cannot be re-used by the company. Total expenditure for the quarter, however, increased by INR 7.7 billion year on year, therefore leading to operating and net profits dipping by 19.6% and 11.5% y/y, to INR 4 billion and INR 4.5 billion respectively. Over the first six months of Fiscal Year 2009/10, sales dipped year on year by 11.5%, with operating profits and net profits shrinking by a huge 95% and 39% respectively.
