The company also provides balls, shinguards, and other training equipment. In addition, Umbro licenses third parties to sell its products. The company serves national teams and professional clubs. It operates through a network of independent licensees in the Americas, the United Kingdom, Europe, and the Asia pacific region. The company was founded in 1924 and is headquartered in Manchester, the United Kingdom. As of March 3, 2008, Umbro Plc operates as a subsidiary of Nike Inc.

Nike Inc. announced that Jim Allaker, currently vice president and general manager of Nike UK and Ireland, will become the new CEO and president of Umbro plc. He replaces Matthew Cook, who left the company to pursue other opportunities. Allaker will be replaced by Marc Van Pappelendam, who most recently was the vice president and general manager of Nike Eastern and Central Europe, based in Hilversum, the Netherlands.
NIKE Inc. and Umbro announced that Steve Makin, Chief Executive Officer and Board member of Umbro, has decided to leave the company. Effective immediately, Makin will be succeeded as President and CEO by Matthew Cook, who most recently was General Manager of Nike Italy. Cook joined Nike from Price Waterhouse in January 1993 as Finance Director of Nike Italy. In 1995, he moved to Nike's world headquarters as Global Financial Planning Director. He returned to Nike Italy in 1997 as Footwear Business Director and became General Manager in 2000.
Umbro announced that at the EGM held on January 31, 2008, the shareholders approved amendments to the company's Articles of Association.
