Key developments for Varian Medical Systems Inc. (VAR)
Varian Medical Systems Inc. will exhibit its PaxScan digital image detectors and its line of X-ray tubes for fluoroscopy, angiography, cardiology and cone-beam CT imaging at the MEDICA 2009 International Trade Fair in Dusseldorf, Germany from November 18-21, 2009. PaxScan 4336R, a 43cm x 36cm cassette size digital detector, that is the first NEMA size DR panel designed to replace standard film cassettes used in existing radiographic and multi-bucky applications. MCS-6074 rotating anode X-ray tube for CT scanning, together with a line of replacement X-ray tubes that are available through Varian's Interay after-market sales group.
Researchers from the University of California, Irvine Medical Center reported that image-guided RapidArc® radiotherapy from Varian Medical Systems Inc. has clinical advantages over earlier fixed-beam approaches to stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) or stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for treating cancer. RapidArc, Varian's technology for delivering volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), enables clinicians to deliver a highly-precise image-guided intensity-modulated treatment quickly, often with just one revolution of the treatment machine around the patient. In addition to being faster and requiring fewer monitor units, RapidArc treatments were found to conform to the shape and size of a targeted tumor at least as well as dynamic, fixed-beam approaches to IMRT, SRS, and SRT. Treatment with RapidArc VMAT using a single arc produced similar dose conformality and homogeneity compared with earlier, more time-consuming approaches.
