Amcol International Corporation, through its subsidiaries, operates as a specialty minerals company in the Americas, Europe, and the Asia Pacific. The company’s Minerals Segment offers custom-blended bentonite and allied non-bentonite products; formulated additives; and sodium bentonite-based scoopable, traditional, and alternative cat litters, as well as specialty pet products to grocery and drug stores, mass merchandisers, wholesale clubs, and pet specialty stores. It also provides sodium bentonite and leonardite used in oil and gas well drilling; bentonite and bentonite blends for the construction industry; agglomerated bentonite to the detergent industry; adsorbent polymers and purified grades of bentonite ingredients for personal skin care products; and nanoclays. Its Environmental segment offers geosynthetic clay liner products for lining and capping landfills, and for containment in tank farms, storm water containment systems, waste stabilization lagoons, sewage lagoons, and mine site and wetlands reclamation applications; waterproofing and roofing underlayment systems; and drilling products. The company’s Oilfield Services segment provides onshore and offshore water treatment filtration, pipeline separation, waste fluid treatment, rental tools, coil tubing, and well testing data services for the oil and gas industry. This segment also offers liquid nitrogen with its personnel and mobile equipment to the production platforms, pipeline operators, and refineries; and rents high-pressure pumps, iron, and manifolds to oil and gas production platform operators. Its Transportation segment offers long-haul trucking and freight brokerage services primarily for the delivery of finished products in the continental United States. The company was formerly known as American Colloid Company and changed its name to AMCOL International Corporation in 1995. AMCOL International Corporation was founded in 1924 and is headquartered in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

Amcol International Corp. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2009. For the quarter, the company reported net income attributable to the company shareholders of $13.3 million or $0.43 per diluted share against $1.9 million or $0.06 per diluted share a year ago. The current year period includes a net expense of $1.6 million or $0.05 per diluted share related to the write off of certain U.S. metal casting operations. Net sales decreased 22.4% to $526.5 million against $678.3 million a year ago. Operating profit was $43.2 million against 63.5 a year ago, declined by 32.0%. Income before income taxes and income was $31.1 million against $53,341 million a year ago. Foreign currency fluctuations and acquisitions had unfavorable impacts of $5.7 million and $1.3 million, respectively, on operating profit. Cash flow from operating activities was $90.6 million against $2.6 million a year ago. This increase was principally due to the decrease in working capital. Capital expenditures were against $39.6 million against $29.6 million a year ago.
