Dongbu HiTek Unveils Low-Voltage BCDMOS Process for Efficient Power Management in Smart Phones and Tablet Computers

Dongbu HiTek announced the immediate availability of a Low Voltage BCDMOS Process (BD130LV) at the 0.13-micron node that is ideally suited for implementing the main Power Management IC (PMIC) for smart phones and tablet computers. Song emphasized that his firm's specialized BCDMOS enables the industry's lowest on-resistance (Rdson). Minimizing leakage current and power consumption, the process also supports popular operating voltages from 1.5V to 6V as well as 1.2V to comply with USB battery charging specifications. The foundry compatible BD130LV process deploys N/PLDMOS transistors that operate up to 40V. Fully isolated nLDMOS transistors that operate up to 20V are also available along with MIM capacitance values adjusted to operating voltage, high-sheet poly resistors at various values, Schottky Diode and Bipolar transistors plus devices that protect against ESD. Royalty free memory may also be accessed. As with all Dongbu HiTek processes, the new BD130LV is supported by a fully characterized process design kit (PDK) and standard CAD tools.

Dongbu Group Seeks To Sell 37.9% In Dongbu HiTek

Experts said that the Korean government should consider whether or not to allow foreign firms to buy stakes in Dongbu HiTek Co., Ltd. (KOSE:A000990) (Dongbu HiTek). Officials at Korea Development Bank (KDB), the main creditor of Dongbu Group's semiconductor unit, plans to send an invitation letter to seven potential buyers, four of whom are foreign companies. A KDB spokesman, however, declined to confirm this information. Dongbu Group is selling its 37.9% in Dongbu HiTek. The entire stake, including the managerial rights premium, is valued at some KRW 135 billion, said the officials. “GlobalFoundries of the United States, Bosch of Germany and TowerJazz of Israel will receive the letter from KDB,” said an official at the bank who declined to be named. KDB and Nomura Securities, the lead manager of the deal, plan to complete the sale by the end of June 2014. GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. is keen on buying the Dongbu HiTek stake as part of its goal to strengthen its strong foundry business, said the bank official. Analysts and government officials are critical of KDB's sales plan because of a possible technology leak. “The Korea Semiconductor Industry Association (KSIA) held an emergency meeting with some local chip designers to discuss what the consequences would be if a foreign firm purchases HiTek,” said an official at the KSIA, who added that most of the participants were against the plan to sell the company to a foreign company. Kwon Ki-joo, a spokesman for Dongbu Group, said he can't comment on issues that are related to mergers and acquisitions.

Dongbu HiTek Confirms Volume Production of Newly Developed "X3 Quattro" Image Sensors for Compact Ultrahigh Resolution Camera

Dongbu HiTek confirmed that its specialized foundry processing is enabling the volume production of enhanced CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) chips developed by Foveon for its parent company, Sigma Corporation. The newly developed Foveon CIS chips, branded "X3 Quattro" direct image sensors, are now being deployed in Sigma's new "dp2 Quattro" compact camera. As the first entry in this new camera line, Sigma's dp2 Quattro will soon be followed by dp1 Quattro and dp3 Quattro models also incorporating X3 Quattro CIS chips manufactured by Dongbu HiTek. Dongbu HiTek continues to focus on serving specialized applications where it can achieve higher profit margins in return for adding higher value. Within the image sensor segment, the company has emerged a key supplier of specialty sensor chips for high-end cameras such as Sigma's dp2 Quattro as well as for automobiles, medical equipment, CCTV, and game consoles. In forecasting growth of the worldwide image sensor market, iSuppli forecasts the market for specialized sensors will grow faster than the sensors targeting mainstream mobile handset applications.
