Hyundai Unveils New Sonata Hybrid in South Korea

Hyundai unveiled its latest-generation Sonata hybrid in South Korea. In terms of appearance, the hybrid borrows heavily from the seventh-generation Sonata launched earlier this year, although changes have been made to its front fascia, bumper, and front and rear lamps to distinguish the hybrid from its traditional counterpart. The latest-generation hybrid vehicle is 35 mm longer, 30 mm wider, and 5 mm taller than the outgoing version. The vehicle's wheelbase has also been extended by 10 mm, allowing greater interior space for occupants. Despite enlarged dimensions, the vehicle's fuel efficiency has improved to 18.2 km/l, up from 16.8 km/l due to the overhauled powertrain, which features a direct injection engine as well as a more powerful electric motor and a refined automatic transmission. The vehicle features a new exterior design with more space in the cabin and in the boot. Powering the vehicle is the 2.0-liter four-cylinder "Nu" gasoline (petrol) engine, which produces 156 PS of power and 19.3 kg/m of torque. The engine's power and torque performance has increased while the biggest change in the powertrain is the shift to direct injection technology from multipoint fuel injection technology. The engine is coupled to a new six-speed automatic transmission which benefits from a lighter torsion damper and new engine clutch. The new transmission does away with the torque converter while making use of an electric oil pump instead of the old mechanical oil pump. The changes extend to an electric motor and lithium-ion battery as well, which offer enhanced power output. The location of the battery has been moved under the floor of the trunk, allowing for a flat trunk floor and creating a more useable cargo area.
