ST Electronics plans to launch its first commercial satellite in the fourth quarter of next year. TeLEOS-1, the satellite will also be Singapore's first commercial earth observation satellite, and is "in the final stage of development". The company's satellite communications & sensor systems unit, STEE-SatComS, had signed a launch service agreement with Antrix Corporation to send TeLEOS-1 into a near equatorial orbit. This will be done using the Indian Space Research Organisation's polar satellite launch vehicle. The 400-kg satellite is equipped with an electro-optical camera that can take images at ground resolution of one metre. The satellite is suited for applications such as disaster and environment monitoring, maritime safety, urban planning and homeland security. STEE-SatComS has also partnered Satrec Initiative and SPOT Asia to distribute the satellite imagery from TeLEOS-1, which is expected to be commercially available in the first half of 2016. The imagery will complement those from sun-synchronous orbit satellites, enhancing the services of its two partners and benefiting their end-users. At the convention, STEE-SatComS also revealed that it had signed a deal with Alliant Techsystems to jointly develop microsatellites and supply integration services to meet a rising demand from government and commercial space customers. The microsatellites will be produced at ATK's space systems division manufacturing facility in Beltsville, Maryland, US. Thereafter, future versions will be made at STEE-SatComS' satellite assembly, integration, testing and production facility here. Both companies will also split marketing and promotion efforts geographically, with STEE-SatComS overseeing the Asia-Pacific, and ATK the Americas, Europe and Middle East regions.
