The Functional Polymeric Materials segment offers elastomers, functional compounds, and specialty polyolefins. The Polyurethane segment develops polyurethanes, adhesives, and coating and construction materials. The Basic Chemicals segment offers phenols, bisphenol A, purified terephthalic acid, polyethylene terephthalate, and ethylene oxide. The Petrochemicals segment offers ethylene, propylene, polyethylene, and polypropylene. The Films and Sheets segment develops packaging films, electronic and optical films, and solar cell sheets. It is also involved in performance analysis, physical property measurements, and safety tests on chemicals; placements, temporary works, and insurance and travel agency operations; and the sale of electronics and information materials. The company was founded in 1892 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

Mitsui Chemicals reported earnings results for the second quarter ended September 2014. For the period, the company posted net profit of JPY 7.4 billion, representing a sharp surge from a JPY 1 billion profit recorded a year ago, partly on higher sales prices and volumes. Net sales increased 6.1% year on year to JPY 776.0 billion, with operating income jumping 69% to JPY 18.6 billion. This was mainly attributable to JPY 37.9 billion increase in sales prices and JPY 6.5 billion increase in sales volume. Ordinary income was JPY 19.4 billion against JPY 10.7 billion a year ago. Cash flows from operating activities were JPY 15.1 billion against JPY 34.5 billion a year ago. For the fiscal year ending March 2015, the company is projecting a net profit of JPY 14 billion, reversing a net loss of JPY 25.1 billion in the previous year, with net sales expected at JPY 1,623 billion. Operating income is expected to be JPY 40.0 billion and ordinary income to be JPY 38.0 billion. Cash flows is expected to be JPY 51.0 billion. For the first half of 2015, the company declared interim dividend of JPY 2.00 per share. For the year 2015, the company expects year end dividend guidance of JPY 3.00 per share.
