Olympus Corporation engages in the manufacture and sale of precision machineries and instruments worldwide. It operates in five segments: Medical, Life Science and Industrial, Imaging, Information and Communication, and Others. The Medical segment provides endoscopic video imaging, medical information, fiberscope, broncho endoscope, and endoscopic ultrasound systems; ultrasound fiberscopes, probes, and centers; ultrasound-guided needle puncture systems; cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization systems; medical treatment peripherals; and ancillary products. This segment also offers endoscopy products for gastroenterological surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, gynecology, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, anesthesiology, and otolaryngology; treatment and surgical equipment; and peripherals, as well as endotherapy products. The Life Science and Industrial segment provides bioscience products, such as system and inverted biological microscopes, stereo and confocal laser scanning microscopes, single-molecule fluorescence detection systems, microscope system equipment, and peripherals; industrial microscope systems, including metallurgical and semiconductor inspection microscopes, flat-panel display inspection systems, laser microscopes, measuring microscopes, microscopic 3-D measurement systems, and peripherals; printers; and remote visual inspection products and non-destructive testing products. The Imaging segment offers digital cameras, lens barrels for digital cameras, optical materials, IC recorders, and binoculars. The Information and Communication segment sells mobile terminals, including mobile handsets. The Others segment manufactures and sells biomedical materials, as well as conducts system development and other business services. The company was formerly known as Olympus Optical Co., Ltd. and changed its name to Olympus Corporation in October 2003. Olympus Corporation was founded in 1919 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

For the year, on consolidated basis, the company reported net income of JPY 8,020 million or JPY 28.96 net income per share on net sales of JPY 743,851 million compared to net loss of JPY 48,985 million or JPY 183.54 net loss per share on net sales of JPY 848,548 million for the prior year. Operating and ordinary income were JPY 35,077 million and JPY 13,046 million against JPY 35,518 million and JPY 17,865 million of prior year. Return on equity was 8.3% against negative 62.3% of prior year. Cash flow from operating activities was JPY 25,233 million against JPY 30,889 million of prior year. Olympus announced that the company's ultrasound endoscopes will now be powered by the ProSound F75 Ultrasound Processor. The ProSound F75 Ultrasound Processor, developed in partnership by Hitachi Aloka Medical Ltd., provides physicians with the high quality imaging--that aids in more accurate diagnosis of diseases of the GI track and surrounding organs such as the pancreas, bile duct, liver, spleen and gallbladder as well as assessing a variety of cancers. The newly introduced platform improves workflow from pre-examination to after examination for better data management, and provides improved visualization for more accurate blood flow information. The ProSound F75 Ultrasound Processor offers a unique ergonomic capability with an adjustable height and depth of the keyboard and monitor that provides comfort to all endoscopists in a practice. The ProSound F75 has versatile capabilities for conducting quick tasks and examinations in every clinical setting. In addition, the device is forward and backward compatible which allows it to work with most endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) scopes. This technology addresses the key requirements of healthcare reform: increased quality of care, decreased costs and enhanced patient satisfaction.
