Five Taiwanese companies signed a contract with the Taipei City government to lay high-speed Internet cables around the city to provide consumers with faster and cheaper connections. The five companies, led by Tai Tung Communication Co. Ltd, will lay over 3,000 kilometers of fiber-optic cables over the next four years, with the ultimate goal of offering broadband access to 80% of Taipei by 2015. By the middle of next year, residents in Neihu, Songshan, and Nangang districts will be the first to enjoy broadband speeds reaching 100 megabits per second at only 90% of the going rate.
Tai Tung Communication Co. Ltd will be added to the Taiwan TAIEX Index.
