Bank of Japan operates as the central bank of Japan. The company’s activities include deciding and implementing monetary policy; ensuring smooth settlement of funds among banks and other financial institutions, thereby contributing to the maintenance of financial system stability; enhancement of payment and settlement systems, and market infrastructure; and issuance, circulation, and maintenance of banknotes. Its activities also comprise conducting operations in the field of international finance, such as foreign exchange transactions, including those executed as part of the bank's management of its foreign currency assets, as well as business related to assisting foreign central banks and international organizations in their investment in yen; and handling government affairs that relate to international finance, such as the compilation and dissemination of Japan's balance of payments statistics and foreign exchange intervention. In addition, the company provides various services relating to the government, such as receipt, disbursement, and accounting of treasury funds; management of the deposits of the Japanese government; custody of securities acquired by or submitted to the government; issuance of, and principal and interest payment on, Japanese government securities (JGSs); operations relating to its role as the book entry transfer institution in the Japanese government bond book-entry system; and purchasing and selling JGSs. Further, it releases the minutes of monetary policy meetings and public statements on the policy board decisions in a timely manner. The company operates 32 branches, 14 local offices in Japan, and 7 overseas representative offices. Bank of Japan was founded in 1882 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

Bank of Japan Announces Executive Changes, Effective June 16, 2014

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) said that it will promote Tokiko Shimizu, associate director-general of its International Department, to deputy director-general on June 16, in the first appointment of a woman to the central bank's senior post at director-general or deputy director-general level. The role of the deputy director-general is to assist the director-general. Shimizu entered the BOJ in 1987 and served as general manager of its Takamatsu branch in Kagawa Prefecture, western Japan, becoming the first female branch chief at the bank. The BOJ also said that it will appoint Nami Numoto, head of the accounting division of the Secretariat of the Policy Board, as general manager of its Hakodate branch in Hokkaido, northernmost Japan, on June 16. Numoto, who joined the bank in 1989, will become the second woman in a branch general manager post, after Shimizu.

Bank of Japan Reports Earnings Results for the Year Ended March 2014

Bank of Japan reported earnings results for the year ended March 2014. For the period, the company reported that its surplus, or net profit, came to JPY 724.2 billion in fiscal 2013 that ended in March, up from the previous year's JPY 576 billion, rising for the third consecutive year. The growth reflected an increase in interest income as the central bank massively buys Japanese government bonds under its "quantitative and qualitative" monetary easing policy introduced in April last year.
