toshiba corp (6502) Key Developments

Toshiba Corporation Supplies Traction Energy Storage System to Tobu Railway Co., Ltd

Toshiba Corporation announced that it has supplied a traction energy storage system (TESS) to Tobu Railway Co. Ltd. TESS stores traction energy generated by decelerating trains as they enter a station and releases it as needed when trains accelerate from the station. The system is planned to operate from December 22. Toshiba's TESS is installed at Unga station on the Tobu Urban Park Line, and utilizes Toshiba's SCiBTM rechargeable batteries to store regenerated power. SCiBTM offer outstanding characteristics, including a high degree of safety, a wide state-of-charge (SOC) range and stable operation at low temperatures. Toshiba's TESS realizes efficient charging and discharging by offering a battery capacity ten times that of typical traction energy storage systems, and also employs the company's proprietary charge-discharge control technology, which takes full advantage of the wide SOC range of the SCiBTM. At Unga Station, regenerative traction energy from train deceleration is stored in the TESS for supply as needed when trains are accelerating from the station, facilitating stable electricity supply. In addition to supporting stable supply, the system can also be optimally configured to support other applications, including traction energy loss prevention and peak demand power management.

Toshiba Corporation Adds of 6TB SATA and SAS Models to MG04 Series

Toshiba Corporation Semiconductor & Storage Products company announced the addition of 6TB SATA and SAS models to its MG04 series of 3.5-inch form factor enterprise capacity class of hard disk drives (HDD). New SAS interface models provide the benefits of 12Gbit/s transfer rate for 6TB, 5TB, 4TB and 2TB HDDs. Sample shipment will begin in CQ1 of 2015. The new MG04 series 6TB models offer a 50% increase in max capacity from prior MG03 generation 4TB models and approximately 30% increase in sustained data rate (MG03xxx400x:165MiB/s, MG04xxx60Ex:205MiB/s). These new HDDs support both industry-standard 4K native and 512e Advanced Format sector technologies for optimum performance in the latest generation servers and storage systems as well as being suitable in legacy applications requiring 512 sector lengths using aligned-write environments. Both the 6TB MG04ACA and MG04SCA 12Gbit/s models offer Toshiba persistent write cache technologies (PWC), designed to help protect against data loss in the event of sudden power loss. Model options supporting SAS and SATA commands to enable sanitize “instant” cryptographic erase (SIE) are also available.
