Kansai Electric Power Co. Provides Earnings Guidance for the Fiscal First Half Year Ending September 2014

Kansai Electric Power Co. expects to swing to a recurring loss in the fiscal first half yearending in September as fuel costs for thermal power generation are likely to remain elevated due to the continued suspension of nuclear plants. The Osaka company sees little prospect of restarting its nuclear reactors, due to safety concerns following the nuclear accident at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima No. 1 power plant damaged in the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The company said it expects to log a group recurring loss of JPY 40 billion for the six months, against a profit of JPY 31,560 million a year before.

Residents Win Court Order to Ban Restart of Oi N-Reactors of Kansai Electric Power Co

Fukui District Court ordered Kansai Electric Power Co. not to restart the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors at its Oi nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture, central Japan. The ruling on the lawsuit, filed in November 2012 by 189 plaintiffs, mainly local residents, comes at a time when the government plans to restart idled nuclear reactors once the Nuclear Regulation Authority confirms their safety. Before the accident, Kanazawa District Court ordered Hokuriku Electric Power Co. in 2006 to stop running the No. 2 unit of its Shika nuclear plant in Ishikawa Prefecture, east of Fukui. The verdict, however, was overturned by a higher court. The Oi power station has defects in cooling equipment and structures to contain radioactive materials that are crucial to dealing with huge quakes. Kansai Electric contended that the safety of important equipment and facilities at the nuclear plant would be secured unless seismic motions exceed 1,260 gals. The Fukui court recognized the validity of claims from the 166 plaintiffs who live within 250 kilometers from the Oi power station. In setting the range, the court took into consideration central government discussions on the possibility of evacuating all residents within 250 kilometers of the Fukushima No. 1 plant in an early phase of the country's worst nuclear accident.
