ABB Ltd provides power and automation technologies for utility and industrial customers worldwide. The company’s Power Products division offers switchgears, circuit breakers, capacitors, surge arresters, cable accessories, high voltage components, reclosers, fuses, contactors, relays, sensors, motor control centers, ring main units, and modular systems; and instrument, power, traction, distribution, and other special transformers. The company’s Discrete Automation and Motion segment manufactures and sells motors, generators, variable speed drives, programmable logic controllers, rectifiers, excitation systems, robotics, and related services for a range of applications in factory automation, process industries, and utilities. Its Low Voltage Products segment provides protection, control, and measurement for electrical installations; enclosures, switchboards, electronics, and electromechanical devices for industrial machines and plants; products for wiring and cable management, cable protection systems, power connection, and safety; and building control systems for home and building automation. The company’s Process Automation segment develops and sells control and plant optimization systems, automation products and solutions, and industry-specific application services for the oil, gas, petrochemicals, metals and minerals, marine and turbocharging, pulp and paper, chemical and pharmaceuticals, and power industries. ABB Ltd was founded in 1883 and is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland.

ABB Ltd. appointed Ulrich Spiesshofer, the head of its Discrete Automation and Motion (DM) division, as Chief Executive Officer. He will succeed Joe Hogan in this role in an orderly transition on September 15, 2013. Hogan will continue with ABB for some months as Senior Advisor to the Board. Spiesshofer joined ABB's Executive Committee in 2005 and was named responsible for DM in 2009. Prior to taking over DM, Spiesshofer was responsible for Corporate Development, leading strategy development and implementation across the power and automation businesses, in very close collaboration with all of ABB's teams. Before joining ABB, Spiesshofer spent three years at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants and 11 years at A.T. Kearney management consultants.
