Agrium Inc. engages in the retail of agricultural products and services. The company operates through three segments: Retail, Wholesale, and Advanced Technologies. The Retail segment supplies crop protection products, such as herbicide, fungicide, insecticide, and adjuvant products; crop nutrients, including dry and liquid nitrogen, phosphate, potash, sulfur, and micronutrients; seeds; and merchandise comprising fencing, feed supplements, livestock-related animal health products, irrigation equipment, and other products. It also provides product application, soil and leaf testing, crop scouting, seed treatment, livestock and wool marketing, insurance and real estate, tissue and soil sampling, and crop disease conditions and irrigation requirements monitoring services, as well as offers plant nutrient and precision agriculture software packages. This segment offers its products and services through 1,220 retail locations in the United States, Canada, Australia, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Uruguay. The Wholesale segment produces, markets, and distributes a range of nutrients, including nitrogen-based, potash, and phosphate-based crop nutrient products to agricultural and industrial customers primarily in the Americas and Europe. The Advanced Technologies segment develops and sells enhanced efficiency fertilizer products, including controlled-release crop nutrient technologies and professional products to a range of target markets, including agriculture, specialty agriculture, professional turf, horticulture, and consumer lawn and garden. The company was formerly known as Cominco Fertilizers Ltd. and changed its name to Agrium Inc. in 1995. Agrium Inc. was founded in 1931 and is headquartered in Calgary, Canada.

Agrium Inc. announced unaudited consolidated financial results for the first quarter ended Mar. 31, 2013. The company announced consolidated net earnings of $141 million or $0.94 diluted earnings per share for the first quarter of 2013, compared with net earnings of $155 million in the first quarter of 2012 or $0.97 diluted earnings per share for the first quarter of 2012. The 2013 first quarter results included a $16 million or $0.09 diluted earnings per share, share-based payments expense. Excluding this item, net earnings would have been $153-million or $1.03 diluted earnings per share. Sales were $3,224,000 against $3,571,000 for the same period of last year. Earnings from associates and joint ventures was $13,000 against $21,000 for the same period of last year. Earnings before finance costs and income taxes was $232,000 against $249,000 for the same period of last year. Earnings before income taxes was $192,000 against $217,000 for the same period of last year. Cash provided by operating activities was $355,000 against $634,000 for the same period of last year. Capital expenditures was $346,000 against $209,000 for the same period of last year. Agrium is providing guidance for the second quarter of 2013 of $4.60 to $5.40 diluted earnings per share. This excludes derivative gains or losses and share-based payments expense in the estimated second quarter results.
