AkzoNobel Staff at Botlek Chlorine Plant Continue Strike

AkzoNobel announced that in the Botlek area of Rotterdam is still operating at low capacity utilisation rates due to a strike lasting for weeks. This way, the personnel wants to force the management to consider a separate wage deal for them. The employees further demand a 10% salary rise, including 3% for this year. The company described the wage demand as unrealistic and unreasonable, mainly due to the difficult situation in the whole basic chemistry sector which is already under major pressure because of the high energy prices in Europe. Trade unions informally met last week the management of the chemicals group, but this did not lead to anything, Ron Vos from the FNV Bondgenoten union. Vos does not expect the conflict to be resolved soon. The chlorine plant employs 95, of whom 55 production workers, who still fall under the company's collective bargaining agreement. Currently, the plant operates at less than 50% of its capacity, but a further reduction of the production output is not possible for safety and environmental reasons. The situation can change if trade union members accept AkzoNobel's new wage proposal for all of its employees in the Netherlands. In this case, the collective labour agreement will apply to the workers at the chlorine plant in the Botlek area of Rotterdam, too.
