AkzoNobel Staff at Botlek Chlorine Plant Postpone Strike to September 8, 2014

AkzoNobel announced that has been postponed to September 8, 2014. That decision was made to secure a safe reduction of the production capacity, including for customers. A much part of the production at Membraam Elektrolyse Bedrijf (MEB) will be halted from September 8, 2014 to September 11, 2014 after the plant's management did not respond to an ultimatum given by the unions. They called for a 10% pay rise and a separate wage deal for MEB's 95 workers who still fall under AkzoNobel's collective labour agreement. The staff want more money because their wages are said to have very moderately increased in recent years and lagged behind the competition. AkzoNobel dubbed the wage demand irresponsible.

AkzoNobel Staff at Botlek Chlorine Plant to Strike over Higher Wages

AkzoNobel in the Botlek area of Rotterdam will largely block production as of Friday in a bid to enforce 10% higher wages. Production at Membraam Elektrolyse Bedrijf (MEB) will run for six hours at 40% of the usual capacity. A further reduction of the production capacity to 10% will follow on Monday. The plant will remain partly operational to guarantee the safety of the processes.
