Akzo Nobel N.V. is engaged in the decorative paints, performance coatings, and specialty chemicals businesses worldwide. Its specialty chemicals include functional chemicals comprising cellulosic specialties, chelates, ethylene amines, metal alkyls, micronutrients, organic peroxides, polysulfides, redispersable powder polymers, salt specialties, and sulfur products, as well as powder polymers for construction applications covering cement and repair mortars, adhesives, floor coatings, and waterproofing systems. The company’s specialty chemicals also comprise industrial chemicals, including salt, chlor-alkali products, and monochloracetic acid; pulp and performance chemicals consisting of bleaching chemicals, such as sodium chloride and hydrogen peroxide, process chemicals, and colloidal silica and expandable microspheres; and surface chemistry chemicals for industrial and agricultural applications. Its performance coating products include automotive and aerospace coatings, marine and protective coatings, powder coatings, and industrial coatings. The company’s decorative paints consist of interior and exterior decoration, as well as protection products. It serves a range of customers, including ship and yacht builders and architects; consumer electronics and appliance companies; steel manufacturers; the construction industry; furniture makers; aircraft, bus, and truck producers; can makers and vehicle bodyshops; and professional and do-it-yourself markets. The company was founded in 1646 and is headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Akzo Nobel NV Announces Earnings Results for the First Quarter of 2014; Provides Financial Guidance for 2014 and Earnings Guidance for 2015

Akzo Nobel NV announced earnings results for the first quarter of 2014. For the quarter, the company reported revenue of EUR 3,383 million were 2% lower compared with EUR 3,465 million for the same period last year. The decrease was mainly a consequence of a 5% impact from currency translation. Operating income was flat at EUR 216 million after EUR 15 million higher restructuring charges and currencies, compared to EUR 217 million a year ago. EBITDA was EUR 364 million against EUR 375 million a year ago. Net income attributable to shareholders was EUR 129 million against EUR 89 million a year ago. Net income attributable to shareholders increased mainly due to lower financing expenses. Adjusted EPS was EUR 0.61 against EUR 0.51 a year ago. Net cash outflow from operating activities was EUR 552 million against EUR 406 million a year ago, mainly as a result of higher seasonal outflows for working capital. CapEx was EUR 115 million, which is below last year. Net debt at the quarter end is EUR 2.2 billion, which is up from the EUR 1.5 billion at year end, reflecting the seasonal build of working capital. The company expects full year 2014 CapEx will be around 4% of revenues and closer to depreciation and amortization levels ongoing. For full year tax guidance, the company estimates the effective tax rate at 29% and the cash tax rate at 24%. The company provided earnings guidance for the year 2015. For the year, the company announced that it is on track to deliver its 2015 targets despite the expected continued fragile economic environment and continued volatile currencies in 2014.

AkzoNobel Announces Dulux Water-Based Gloss Range Promotion

AkzoNobel announced a promotion for its new high-performance water-based gloss paint, the Dulux Water-Based Gloss(WBG)range. The Dulux WBG range provides homeowners with a rich-pallete colours of paints, coupled with low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), as well as being low in odour. The Dulux WBG range comes with high-sheen finish, long lasting colour with yellowing resistance, and more than 2,000 colours to choose from. With its 100% water-based features, the Dulux WBG is also specially formulated to give good application properties and appearance characteristics, with the added advantage of quick-drying.
