Employees at Chlorine Plant of Dutch Akzonobel in the Botlek Area of Rotterdam Ends Long-Lasting Strike after Approval of Preliminary Collective Labour Agreement by Trade Union Members

Employees at the chlorine plant of Dutch AkzoNobel in the Botlek area of Rotterdam have made an end of a long-lasting strike after a preliminary collective labour agreement signed with the chemicals group was approved by trade union members. The agreement has a term of one year and applies to around 5,000 employees who will see their wages increase by 1.85%, the FNV Bondgenoten union said Wednesday. The plant, which employs 95 staff of whom 55 engaged in production, has run at low capacity utilisation rates since September due to the strike. In addition to more pay, the employees also insisted on a separate wage deal, but the company rejected to meet the demand. So, the plant operated at less than 50% of its capacity as a further reduction of the production output was impossible for safety and environmental reasons.

AkzoNobel, Dutch Partners Sign with Enerkem to Explore Waste-to-Chemical Production

AkzoNobel, along with Dutch partners, is working with Enerkem to explore the use of waste streams as feedstock for chemical production and the development of waste-to-chemicals facilities. The collaboration is looking to benefit from Enerkem's proprietary technology that converts waste into synthesis gas - a common starting material for products such as methanol and ammonia. The initial partners - AkzoNobel, Enerkem, the investment and development agency for the Northern Netherlands (NOM), Groningen Seaports, Rotterdam Partners and InnovationQuarter - are aiming to convert waste back into useful products. The partners plan to test various local waste streams, including residual municipal and agricultural waste.
