The Allstate Corporation, through its subsidiaries, engages in the provision of personal property and casualty insurance, life insurance, and retirement and investment products primarily in the United States. The company’s Allstate Protection segment sells private auto and homeowner’s insurance products under the Allstate and Encompass brand names, as well as auto insurance products under the Esurance brand through agencies and directly through call centers and the Internet. It also provides specialty auto products, including motorcycle, trailer, motor home, and off-road vehicle insurance policies; specialty property products comprising renter, landlord, boat, umbrella, manufactured home, and condominium insurance policies; roadside assistance products; guaranteed automobile protection and vehicle service products that are sold through auto dealers; and commercial products for small business owners, as well as insurance agency services. In addition, this segment participates in the involuntary or shared private passenger auto insurance business. The company’s Allstate Financial segment offers traditional and variable life insurance; retirement and investment; voluntary accident and health insurance products; deferred and immediate fixed annuities; and funding agreements backing medium-term notes. This segment markets its products through its agencies and financial specialists, independent agents and independent master brokerage agencies, and specialized structured settlement brokers, as well as directly through call centers and the Internet. The company was founded in 1931 and is based in Northbrook, Illinois.

The Allstate Corporation reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2013. For the quarter, the company's revenues were $8,463 million compared with $8,362 million a year ago. Net income was $709 million or $1.47 per diluted share compared with $766 million or $1.53 per diluted share a year ago. Operating income was $647 million or $1.35 per diluted share compared with $710 million or $1.42 per diluted share a year ago. The decline from the first quarter of 2012 in both net and operating income was primarily due to higher catastrophe losses, partially offset by a lower property-liability underlying combined ratio. As on March 31, 2013, the company's book value per share was $43.46. Income from operations before income tax expense was $1,030 million compared with $1,112 million a year ago. Net cash provided by operating activities was $740 million compared with $807 million a year ago. Purchases of property and equipment, net was $60 million compared with $51 million a year ago.

For the period, the company estimated catastrophe losses of $198 million, pre-tax ($129 million after-tax), and an estimated $359 million, pre-tax ($233 million after-tax), for first quarter 2013. Catastrophe losses occurring in the first quarter comprised nine events at an estimated cost of $391 million, pre-tax, partially offset by favorable reserve reestimates of prior year catastrophe losses.
