alcatel-lucent (ALU) Details

Alcatel-Lucent provides Internet protocol (IP) and cloud networking, and ultra-broadband fixed and wireless access to service providers and their customers, enterprises, and institutions worldwide. The company operates in three segments: Core Networking, Access, and Other. The Core Networking segment offers intelligent IP service routers, switches, and software defined networking platforms to support IP-based applications and services; and terrestrial optical products, which enable carriers to manage voice, data, and video traffic patterns based on various applications or platforms. This segment also develops, manufactures, installs, and maintains undersea telecommunications cable networks; and provides microwave radio products, as well as offers network build and implementation IP, platforms, and platforms professional services. The Access segment offers wireless products and services that enable mobile network operators to offer mobile data capacity; cable, antenna, tower systems, and their related electronic components; and fixed access products, which enable service providers to offer ultra-broadband connectivity over digital subscriber lines and fiber connections. It also provides fixed network build and implementation, multivendor maintenance, and licensing services; and managed services, including build-operate-manage-transfer and operations transformation solutions, and network operations services. The Other segment offers communications and network solutions for businesses of various sizes to deliver collaborative conversations; and networking, satellite communications, voice-over-IP, optical routers, and other solutions for the United States national security, defense, and advanced research communities. The company serves transportation, energy, and public sector customers. Alcatel-Lucent was founded in 1898 and is headquartered in Paris, France.

alcatel-lucent (ALU) Key Developments

Alcatel-Lucent Is Launches the TWDM-PON (Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Networks) Solution

Alcatel-Lucent is launching the TWDM-PON (Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Networks) solution. This new fixed ultra-broadband access technology will allow operators to smoothly increase the capacity of existing fiber networks and meet all customers' growing data demands. Alcatel-Lucent and Vodafone have been engaged in co-development of TWDM-PON since 2010 to test potential deployment scenarios for the technology. During this time the companies have contributed to its standardization and completed a successful trial. TWDM-PON technology has been selected as the successor to current GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks) technologies. TWDM-PON uses four wavelengths per fiber, giving a total capacity of 40 gigabits-per-second (Gbps), and can support new operational and business uses that create a much faster and higher return on investment for operators than previous generations of PON technology. TWDM-PON enables an operator to deliver different services over each wavelength. Each fiber can be flexibly configured to enable customer services ranging from a few megabits-per-second up to 10 gigabits-per-second. As TWDM-PON can co-exist with current PON technology, it provides a clear and cost-effective way for operators to evolve their existing fiber access networks. The technology also enables a 'pay as you grow' model, allowing operators to easily and cost effectively increase bandwidth as required. Wavelength multiplexing means different operators can easily share the same infrastructure. This can facilitate competition. TWDM-PON technology is supported by the cornerstone of Alcatel-Lucent's fixed ultra-broadband portfolio, the 7360 Intelligent Services Access Manager FX solution, ensuring smooth network evolution. Alcatel-Lucent is introducing a new 4-port TWDM-PON line card and optical network unit supporting 10Gbps symmetrical bitrate. Products will be available in the first quarter of 2015. Alcatel-Lucent Launches New Ultra-Broadband G.fast

Alcatel-Lucent is launching a new ultra-broadband G.fast solution to become available in the first quarter of 2015 that will extend the company's comprehensive portfolio of very high-bandwidth fixed and wireless access technologies. The new solution will allow operators to place fiber access closer to subscribers' homes, providing them with even faster Internet services as demand continues to grow, driven by the explosion in data and video. The commercial launch follows 12 trials with operators, including A1, a subsidiary of Telekom Austria, in which a regular subscriber was connected in order to independently test G.fast in the field. This trial comes a year after Alcatel-Lucent and A1 conducted the first laboratory trial of G.fast with vectoring where they achieved speeds of 1.1 gigabit-per-second (Gbps). Other trials have included BT and Orange. Eight more operator trials have been confirmed before the end of the year. The new 7368 ISAM single-port G.fast Optical Network Terminal (ONT) accelerates the availability of fiber-like speeds without the need for operators to bring fiber all the way into the premises -- the most costly and time consuming part of any fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployment. Instead, fiber can be drawn close to the home and G.fast used to deliver speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) over the existing telephone line into the premises. Alcatel-Lucent's G.fast ONT can also be deployed in a multiple-dwelling unit, with one ONT serving each household. Customer trials use a multi-port G.fast solution using vectoring technology to eliminate the cross-talk interference that occurs when two or more copper lines are in close proximity, which adversely affects speeds. The multi-port G.fast solution will drive the evolution of Alcatel-Lucent's VDSL2 micro-node portfolio.

Alcatel-Lucent Signs Technical Collaboration Agreement with KT

Alcatel-Lucent has signed a technical collaboration agreement with KT, to power the adoption of a Network Functions Virtualization (NFV)-based infrastructure. KT and Alcatel-Lucent plan to create an NFV proof-of-concept that includes Alcatel-Lucent's virtualized Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) systems to provide advanced service delivery capabilities; CloudBand NFV platform for the management of the NFV environment; and Nuage Networks Virtualized Services Platform (VSP) for software defined networking (SDN) to consolidate and automate the network.
