alcatel-lucent (ALU) Details

Alcatel-Lucent provides Internet protocol (IP) and cloud networking, and ultra-broadband fixed and wireless access to service providers and their customers, enterprises, and institutions worldwide. The company operates in three segments: Core Networking, Access, and Other. The Core Networking segment offers intelligent IP service routers, switches, and software defined networking platforms to support IP-based applications and services; and terrestrial optical products, which enable carriers to manage voice, data, and video traffic patterns based on various applications or platforms. This segment also develops, manufactures, installs, and maintains undersea telecommunications cable networks; and provides microwave radio products, as well as offers network build and implementation IP, platforms, and platforms professional services. The Access segment offers wireless products and services that enable mobile network operators to offer mobile data capacity; cable, antenna, tower systems, and their related electronic components; and fixed access products, which enable service providers to offer ultra-broadband connectivity over digital subscriber lines and fiber connections. It also provides fixed network build and implementation, multivendor maintenance, and licensing services; and managed services, including build-operate-manage-transfer and operations transformation solutions, and network operations services. The Other segment offers communications and network solutions for businesses of various sizes to deliver collaborative conversations; and networking, satellite communications, voice-over-IP, optical routers, and other solutions for the United States national security, defense, and advanced research communities. Elisa Selects Alcatel-Lucent's Most Advanced IP Core Routing Technology to Meet Finland's Ever-Expanding Need for Broadband Capacity

Alcatel-Lucent and Elisa announced a significant network upgrade that will give Elisa the ultra-broadband capacity needed to meet the demands of next-generation bandwidth-hungry services and applications. Finland has one of the high mobile penetration rates and customer usages in the world. Deploying the industry's most advanced end-to-end IP/MPLS network solution, including Alcatel-Lucent's class-leading core router, will provide a highly scalable and agile network architecture allowing Elisa to continuously improve the customer experience both inside and outside the home or enterprise by offering significantly better performance. Enhancements include smoother video downloads, improved service redundancy for increased reliability and greater responsiveness as well as the ability to offer new services. Elisa's new network supports the explosive growth in mobile broadband and offers a convergence of fixed and mobile services to both business and private customers. Alcatel-Lucent technology being deployed includes: 7950 eXtensible Routing System (XRS) core router, 7750 Service Router (SR), 7210 Service Access Switch (SAS) family for aggregation, 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM) for management and a service portal for provisioning. Alcatel-Lucent will also be supplying installation and commissioning, lifecycle program management, operations support and consulting and will manage a seamless migration of network elements and services from its global Migration Operations Centre.

Alcatel-Lucent Launches Interactive Application to Measure the Impact of New Technologies on Network Energy Consumption

Alcatel-Lucent unveiled a new application developed by its research arm, Bell Labs that network operators and others can use to explore how the use of the latest technologies can dramatically reduce energy consumption, costs and the carbon footprint of their networks. This easy-to-use G.W.A.T.T. - Global 'What if' Analyzer of NeTwork Energy ConsumpTion app - forecasts trends in energy consumption and efficiency based on a wide variety of traffic growth scenarios and technology evolution choices. G.W.A.T.T. provides a view of the entire network, showing how much power is consumed at each point in the network. This makes it possible for G.W.A.T.T. to quickly identify 'hot spots' in a network where the most energy is consumed, and also provides a way to identify how different technologies can make the network more efficient. The application was developed as part of Alcatel-Lucent's commitment to dramatically reducing the energy consumption and operational costs of information and communications technology (ICT) in the face of dramatic growth in data traffic and associated energy use impacts.

Alcatel-Lucent Unveils New Access Switch and Additional Network Capabilities

Alcatel-Lucent has announced that its enterprise division is unveiling its OmniSwitch 6860 family and additional network capabilities. Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise is adding deep packet inspection at the wired and wireless access layer expanding its Application Fluent Network capabilities. It can now consolidate this information with network analytics tools that help IT teams gain improved visibility into the applications, and also create policies and enforce them at the edge of the network to secure and optimize delivery of applications to employees and customers. Additionally, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise helps businesses create more agile networks needed to deploy applications, now that its entire portfolio has Software Defined Networking (SDN) capabilities. Its end-to-end SDN architecture is completed in this launch with the support of SDN interfaces reaching across the access, to the core and into the data center, providing customers investment protection and enabling interoperability with third-party solutions. The SDN capabilities include REST API's, OpenFlow 1.0/1.3 and the ability to leverage OpenStack plug-ins for full orchestration across the entire network. The new OmniSwitch 6860 (OS6860) family, with embedded analytics and programmability is one of the industry's most advanced gigabit access switches. It is an innovative ASIC and coprocessor providing wire-rate deep packet inspection (DPI) and policy enforcement right at the edge of the network. IT has more visibility of applications being used, how much bandwidth is consumed, and the immediate ability to enforce policies to control prioritization, QoS and security. It is SDN-enabled with the support of OpenFlow and OpenStack. OmniSwitch 6860 models also support four unique 1G PoE ports that offer up to 60W Power over Ethernet (PoE) to support next generation devices that require high power, such as small cells that combine cellular and Wi-Fi, and high definition video surveillance cameras. The OmniSwitch 6860 is also data center and IT friendly. All ports are in the front, with front-to-back cooling and an innovative Bluetooth management connection so smart devices can be used to manage the switch. In addition, it can be used in the data center as a 1GbE top-of-rack switch. The wireless LAN has DPI capability of up to 1,500 applications and programmability support on Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise OmniAccess WLAN controllers. It also features new OmniAccess Access Points to better address the growing adoption of Gigabit wireless (802.11ac) and the diverse deployment needs with outdoor AP, low cost APs and Instant APs. The enhancements also include the Aruba Networks' AirGroup service enhancements to support Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) devices. Customers can use consumer devices for screen-sharing and media-streaming in the corporate network not only from Apple but also from manufacturers like Sony, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Samsung, etc. AirGroup enables end users and IT administrators to self-register devices and define who can access them.
