ams AG Expands Family of Power Management ICs for Nvidia Tegra and Other Multi-Core ARM Processors

ams AG added to its family of power management ICs (PMICs) for mobile multi-core ARM processors with the AS3722, which provides a complete power-control solution for Nvidia’s Tegra K1 mobile system-on-chip (SoC). ams is also releasing the AS3728, an 8A high-voltage power stage to complement the AS3722’s high-current DC-DC controllers. The AS3728 provides for a streamlined power architecture in embedded systems, since it can supply the high current required by processor cores directly from a 12V power rail. The AS3722 PMIC and multiple AS3728 devices power the Tegra K1 processor in Nvidia’s Jetson TK1 reference design board. The Tegra K1, Nvidia’s latest mobile SoC, features a quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 CPU and 192 CUDA graphics processing cores. Together, the AS3722 and the AS3728 power stage provide a space-saving and thermally efficient power solution for advanced multi-core ARM processors. This makes them ideal for use in compact mobile devices such as tablets and notebooks, and in industrial applications such as security cameras and fanless (sealed housing) computers, in which the system designer must carefully manage the temperature of circuit boards carrying multiple high-power components. This is because the AS3722 enables a board layout optimized for thermal performance. Thanks to a patented design innovation by ams, the feedback interface to the AS3722 only requires two wires (one control signal, one temperature signal) instead of the four or five wires typically required by other PMICs. The AS3722 also helps reduce board space requirements, integrating all the power rails required by a sophisticated processor such as the Tegra K1. The AS3722 includes four step-down DC-DC regulators operating at up to 4MHz, three step-down DC-DC controllers, 11 universal LDOs, a real-time clock with a 1µA total current requirement, and a control interface accessed via an I2C or serial peripheral interface. The AS3728 power stage has a highly thermally efficient design and supports two phases, each of 4A (maximum), with an independent control input for each. The device incorporates separate low- and high-side N-channel MOSFETs for each phase. The AS3722’s three DC-DC controllers may each control the two phases of an AS3728, to provide a maximum 24A power output. The 3MHz switching frequency of the DC-DC controllers provides for a fast response to load transients and keeps the size of the external components to a minimum. The DC-DC controllers also implement automatic phase selection, ensuring that the circuit switches between single- and multiple-phase modes depending on the output current, to optimize energy efficiency while maintaining instant full-load capability when required in the event of a load transient.

ams AG Releases New Family of Intelligent Sensors

ams AG released a new family of intelligent sensors that integrate six key sensing functions including gesture detection and Mobeam barcode emulation. The TMG399x product family is ideally suited for touchless gesture control and display management in smartphones, tablets and many other consumer electronics on the market. The TMG399x gesture software currently supports optimized Android drivers, and a fully-qualified gesture library is available for the Qualcomm ADSP sensor core on the Snapdragon 6xx and 8xx processor family for four-direction gesture, plus ALS, proximity, and all the other standard features. The ams gesture software offers expanded capability to include support for eight-direction gesture, push button and taps, and work is in-progress to support other third-party sensor hub devices. The gesture engine features automatic ambient light subtraction, crosstalk cancelation, dual 8-bit data converters, power saving inter-conversion delay, 32-dataset FIFO, and interrupt driven I2C communication. It accommodates a wide range of gesture-detection requirements, from simple North-South-East-West gestures to more complex gestures, including simulated button pushing and taps. Power consumption and noise are minimized with adjustable IR LED timing and optimized gesture algorithms. The TMG399x product family also integrates color sensors from ams. Accurate color management and light intensity measurements are critical parameters for display management in portable devices operating under a wide range of light sources, including fluorescent, incandescent and sunlight. Proximity detection, composed of the IR LED and sensor, is optimized for object detection within 100mm and can be used to simplify a product's user interface, such as intelligent on/off control of smartphone touchscreens. The proximity detection is factory-calibrated to a distance of 100mm, eliminating the need for OEMs to perform production-line calibration, and simplifying the end-product manufacturing. The TMG3993 and TMG3992 are in volume production now, and priced at $2.50 for 1,000 pieces.

ams AG Provides Software-Compatible Incremental Quadrature Output

ams AG provided software-compatible incremental quadrature output. In devices which use rotary knobs, the AS5601 and its paired magnet may replace a rotary encoder without any change to the host microcontroller or its application software. The AS5601 is based on ams' proven patented magnetic Hall position-sensing technology, which is already widely used in the automotive, industrial, medical and consumer markets. Since the AS5601 performs contactless rotary position measurement, it suffers none of the reliability problems with which conventional rotary encoders are plagued. They are notoriously prone to interference and premature failure because of the effects of mechanical wear and contamination by dust, grease, dirt and humidity. The robust differential sensing circuit in the AS5601 also rejects interference from external magnetic stray fields. The AS5601's operation, including its zero position, provides for easy configuration, since its register settings are accessed via an I(2) C interface and are saved in on-chip OTP memory. In addition, the quadrature (A/B) output offers great flexibility, providing between 8 and 2048 positions. This means that the AS5601 may be used, for instance by off-the-shelf rotary knob or encoder manufacturers, in multiple end products with different output requirements. Users of the AS5601 also have the choice of a 12-bit digital output, suitable for designs that are not directly replacing a conventional rotary encoder. As well as measuring angular displacement, the AS5601 can detect button presses. Algorithms implemented in the AS5601 reliably detect a sudden significant reduction in the air gap between the IC and its paired magnet, generating a PUSH output signal. This push-button function is immune to variations in magnetic field strength due to temperature variations or ageing. By default, the AS5601 automatically enters one of three low-power modes, keeping power consumption to a minimum by reducing the scanning frequency when the device has been inactive for a defined interval. In the lowest-power mode, the AS5601 draws just 1.5mA.
