ams AG Introduces the AS3715, a Configurable Power Management IC

ams AG introduced the AS3715, a configurable power management IC (PMIC) which enables OEMs to implement power circuits for multiple end products with the same hardware design. The new AS3715 includes all the essential power management building blocks required to provide a power solution for handheld devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, such as action cameras, navigation devices, tablets, media players and gaming consoles. Highly versatile, it offers the capability to program the start-up configuration, so that the operation of the power system can easily be adapted for different application processors. The programmability of the start-up sequence and of the built-in DC-DC converters' outputs allows design teams to accommodate changes in end-product specifications at any time without re-spinning their board design. The power regulation blocks in the AS3715 include: three 4MHz DC-DC step-down (buck) converters with programmable outputs; one DC-DC step-down controller; two DC-DC step-up (boost) converters with programmable outputs; and eight LDOs. The device also offers eight GPIOs, a charger circuit supporting a 1.5A output, an I(2) C interface, three current sinks, an ADC and a watchdog timer. The DC-DC controller controls external power stages, allowing the user to maximize efficiency, simplify PCB routing and distribute power and heat dissipation over a wide board area. It supports configuration as either a single- or dual-phase controller, which means that the system's efficiency sweet spot can be adapted to the requirements and size constraints of the design. The DC-DC controller can manage an output current of up to 8A. Two of the eight LDOs are low-noise devices well suited to RF modules, image sensors and other noise-sensitive circuits. The AS3715's three high-voltage current sinks, which are intended for LCD backlighting, provide a programmable current output adjustable in 150A increments in a range from 0A to 40mA. In addition, PWM input options provide a simple means to implement dynamic luminance scaling. The integrated 5V boost converter can supply power to HDMI interfaces or other 5V peripherals. Other configuration options include the ability to implement either switched-mode or linear charging, depending on whether the design must be optimized for power efficiency or for space and cost. The AS3715 is priced at $3.68 for 1,000-unit quantities. It is housed in a space-saving 3.7mm x 3.7mm WL-CSP 91 package. It operates from a single 2.7-5.5V supply, and is rated for operation over a temperature range from -40degC to +85degC.

ams AG Introduces AS5600, Magnetic Rotary Position Sensor

ams AG introduced the AS5600, a magnetic rotary position sensor which makes it easier than ever before to replace a traditional potentiometer with a more reliable contactless alternative. To appeal to manufacturers and users of potentiometers, the AS5600 features a ratiometric output, mirroring the output of a potentiometer (which is a variable resistor). This means that users of a potentiometer do not need to change the application code running on their microcontroller when they replace it with a design based on an AS5600. Offering precise 12-bit resolution over a full 0-360deg rotation, the AS5600 can measure angular displacement in any application currently using a potentiometer, including rotary knobs and dials. By pairing the AS5600 with a low-cost two-pole magnet, design engineers can implement an angle-measurement system at a similar cost to that of a mid-range potentiometer, benefiting from the attractive price/performance ratio of the device. The magnetic rotary position sensor AS5600 extends ams's broad portfolio of magnetic position sensors, which all include proprietary differential sensing technology, providing high immunity from stray magnetic fields. The contactless sensing method also offers superior reliability to a potentiometer's contacting method. Unlike a potentiometer, in which a mechanical wiper slides along a conductive armature, a magnetic position sensor senses rotary motion by measuring changes in the magnetic field generated by the paired magnet. This field-sensing method is unaffected by dust, dirt, humidity, moisture or vibration -- phenomena which all tend to distort or disable a potentiometer's measurement operations. While offering better performance and reliability than a potentiometer, the AS5600 has also introduced new power-saving modes which enable it to rival the low power consumption of a potentiometer. It implements four power-saving modes, and automatically switches to the lowest power mode after one minute of inactivity. In this mode, it scans for movement ten times a second. On detecting movement, it instantly switches to a user-selected power mode, operating at a higher sampling frequency. In lowest power mode, the AS5600 draws just 1.5mA (maximum). The high accuracy of the measurements captured by the AS5600 is due to its on-chip Hall elements, a high-performance functional block found in all magnetic position sensors made by ams. Non-linearity over a full 360deg rotation, over the device's entire temperature range, is just +/-0.28% at the digital output. Maximum noise is 0.015deg(rms).

ams AG Reports Group Earnings Results for the Second Quarter and First Half Ended June 30, 2014; Provides Earnings Guidance for the Third Quarter of 2014

ams AG reported group earnings results for the second quarter and first half ended June 30, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported that revenues were EUR 106.3 million, up 23% sequentially compared to the first quarter and up 17% from EUR 91.2 million in the same quarter 2013. On a constant currency basis, second quarter revenues were 20% higher compared to the second quarter last year. The result from operations (EBIT) excluding acquisition-related costs for the second quarter was EUR 26.4 million or 25% of revenues, an increase of 127% compared to EUR 11.6 million in the second quarter of 2013. The result from operations (EBIT) including acquisition-related costs for the second quarter was EUR 24.0 million or 23% of revenues, an increase of 164% compared to EUR 9.1 million in the second quarter of 2013. This result reflects ams active operating expense and R&D resource management. The net result was EUR 22.2 million compared to EUR 9.0 million in the same period last year. Basic and diluted earnings per share were EUR 1.64/1.57 compared to EUR 0.67/0.64 for the second quarter 2013. Operating cash flow was EUR 34.2 million compared to EUR 23.2 million in the second quarter last year. For the first half of 2014, revenues were EUR 192.6 million, increasing 9% from EUR 176.1 million recorded in the first half of 2013. On a constant currency basis, first half revenues were 13% higher compared to the first half of 2013. The result from operations (EBIT) including acquisition-related costs was EUR 39.4 million, up 101% from EUR 19.6 million in the same period 2013. The net profit was EUR 36.9 million or EUR 2.72/2.60 per share (basic/diluted) compared to EUR 18.9 million or EUR 1.41/1.35 per share (basic/diluted), for the same period last year. Operating cash flow was EUR 48.5 million compared to EUR 36.9 million in the first half year 2013. For the third quarter of 2014, the company expects revenues of EUR 127-132 million driven by product ramp-ups in its consumer business for new device platforms. The company anticipates gross margins to remain on a comparable level quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter and EBIT margin to expand further by more than 300 basis points sequentially.
