Aon plc announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2013. For the quarter, the company reported total revenues of $2,915 million compared with $2,841 million for the same period a year ago. Operating income was $410 million compared with $402 million for the same period a year ago. Income before income taxes was $368 million compared with $346 million for the same period a year ago. Net income attributable to Aon shareholders was $261 million or $0.82 per diluted share compared with $238 million or $0.71 per diluted share for the same period a year ago. Adjusted operating income was $538 million compared with $529 million for the same period a year ago. Adjusted income before income taxes was $496 million compared with $473 million for the same period a year ago. Adjusted net income attributable to Aon shareholders was $356 million or $1.11 per diluted share compared with $330 million or $0.98 per diluted share for the same period a year ago. Cash provided by operations was $54 million compared with cash used in operations of $15 million for the same period a year ago. Capital expenditures was $60 million compared with $71 million for the same period a year ago. Total revenue increased 3% compared to the prior year quarter primarily driven by a 2% increase in organic revenue and a 1% increase in commissions and fees resulting from acquisitions, net of divestitures, partially offset by a 42% decline in investment income due to lower average interest rates. The company currently anticipates an effective tax rate on net income from continuing operations of approximately 26.0% in 2013.
