Apogee Enterprises, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, designs and develops glass solutions for enclosing commercial buildings and framing art primarily in the United States, Canada, and Brazil. The company operates through four segments: Architectural Glass, Architectural Services, Architectural Framing Systems, and Large-Scale Optical Technologies (LSO). The Architectural Glass segment is involved in the fabrication of coated, high-performance architectural glass. The Architectural Services segment designs, engineers, fabricates, and installs the walls of glass, windows, and other curtainwall products making up the outside skin of commercial and institutional buildings. The Architectural Framing Systems segment designs, engineers, fabricates, and finishes the aluminum frames used in customized aluminum and glass windows, curtainwalls, storefronts, and entrance systems comprising the outside skin and entrances of commercial and institutional buildings. This segment is also involved in painting and anodizing of architectural aluminum and PVC shutters. The LSO segment manufactures value-added glass and acrylic for the custom picture framing and fine art markets. The company’s architectural glass products and services are used in commercial buildings, such as office towers, hotels, and retail centers; and institutional buildings, including education facilities and dormitories, health care facilities, and government buildings, as well as high-end multi-family buildings. Apogee Enterprises, Inc. markets its architectural products and services through direct sales force and independent sales representatives to architects, building owners, general contractors, and glazing subcontractors in the commercial construction market; and value-added glass and acrylics through independent distributors and retailers, as well as directly to museums, and public and private galleries. Apogee Enterprises, Inc. was founded in 1949 and is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Apogee Enterprises, Inc. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter of fiscal year ended May 31, 2014. For the period, the company reported net sales of $210,883,000 compared to $179,311,000 a year ago. Operating income was $7,817,000 compared to $6,115,000 a year ago. Earnings before income taxes were $9,156,000 compared to $5,859,000 a year ago. Net earnings were $6,102,000 compared to $4,159,000 a year ago. Basic and diluted earnings per share were $0.21 compared to diluted earnings per share of $0.14 a year ago. Net cash provided by operating activities was $1,196,000 compared to net cash used in operating activities of $2,167,000 a year ago. Capital expenditures were $8,738,000 compared to $1,512,000 a year ago. The company provided earnings guidance for the fiscal year of 2015. For the period, the company expects to earn $1.40 to $1.50 per share on revenue growth of 15% to 20%. This is improved from the previous EPS outlook of $1.35 to $1.50. The company expects that capital spending for fiscal 2015 will be approximately $40 million. Gross margin is anticipated to be approximately 23%. The company is expecting that full year gross margin will be approximately 23%. The company anticipates that the gross margin will step up in the second quarter, with the third quarter the strongest. The company anticipates a tax rate of approximately 34% for the full year, and this compares to the fiscal 2014 full year rate of just under 30%. The company expects to generate positive free cash flow for fiscal 2015, after the company spent approximately $40 million for the full year on capital that is balanced across investments for growth, productivity and new products, as well as for maintenance. Depreciation and amortization for the year should be approximately $30 million. The company again expects to be free cash flow positive after this level of investments.
