American Water Works Company, Inc. Announces Unaudited Consolidated Earnings Results for the Second Quarter and Six Months Ended June 30, 2014; Affirms Earnings Guidance for the Year 2014

American Water Works Company, Inc. announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported operating revenues of $759,159,000 against $724,265,000 a year ago. Operating income was $253,774,000 against $241,887,000 a year ago. Income before income taxes was $181,489,000 against $167,719,000 a year ago. Net income was $109,299,000 or $0.61 per basic and diluted share against $101,263,000 or $0.57 per basic and diluted share a year ago. Adjusted net income was $112,290,000 or $0.62 per diluted share against $104,158,000 or $0.58 per diluted share a year ago. Adjusted diluted earnings per share were up approximately 9% from the last year. This increase is due mainly to higher revenues in its Regulated Business through rate authorizations and infrastructure charges, as well as additional revenues from acquisitions. This quarter, the company invested about $213 million in needed improvement. Because its first quarter capital spending was hampered due to a very cold winter, year-to-date spending is just a bit behind. The company reported cash flow from operating activities was $205.7 million compared to $140.6 million in 2013 or a $65.1 million increase. This increase in cash flow from operations was primarily due to: stronger cash flow from core growth in the business; a decrease in pension and postretirement benefit contributions and changes in working capital. Operating revenues increased $34.9 million or 4.8% with revenues from its Regulated Business increasing by $30.2 million or 4.7% compared to second quarter 2013. For the six months, the company reported operating revenues of $1,441,105,000 against $1,360,402,000 a year ago. Operating income was $439,870,000 against $406,120,000 a year ago. Income before income taxes was $294,495,000 against $256,530,000 a year ago. Net income was $177,422,000 or $0.99 per basic and diluted share against $158,906,000 or $0.89 per basic and diluted share a year ago. Adjusted net income was $183,954,000 or $1.02 per diluted share against $161,801,000 or $0.91 diluted share a year ago. The company's capital investments during the first six months of 2014 totaled approximately $387.9 million. The company affirmed annual earnings guidance to be in the range of $2.35 to $2.45 per share, with performance trending toward the upper end of the range, assuming normal weather patterns for August through the remainder of the year 2014 and excludes the impact of the Freedom Industries chemical spill in West Virginia, which was estimated at $0.04 through June 30, 2014. The company anticipates investing up to $1.1 billion in 2014, with the majority allocated to upgrading its water and wastewater systems to ensure reliable service to customers.
