American Water Works Company, Inc., through its subsidiaries, provides water and wastewater services in the United States and Canada. The company’s Regulated Businesses segment offers water and wastewater services to approximately 1,500 communities in 16 states. This segment owns approximately 80 surface water treatment plants; 500 groundwater treatment plants; 1,000 groundwater wells; 100 wastewater treatment facilities; 1,200 treated water storage facilities; 1,300 pumping stations; 90 dams; and 46,000 miles of mains and collection pipes. The Regulated Businesses segment serves residential customers; commercial customers, such as shops and businesses; industrial customers, including manufacturing and production operations; public authorities, which comprise government buildings and other public sector facilities; and other water utilities, as well as supplies water to public fire hydrants for firefighting purposes, and private fire customers for use in fire suppression systems in office buildings and other facilities. Its Market-Based Operations segment undertakes contracts to design, build, operate, and maintain water and wastewater facilities for the United States military, municipalities, and the food and beverage industry and other customers; provides services to homeowners and smaller commercial establishments to protect against the cost of repairing broken or leaking water pipes, and clogged or blocked sewer pipes inside and outside their accommodations; and offers biosolids management, transport, and disposal services to municipal and industrial customers, as well as granular carbon technologies and products for cleansing water and wastewater, and wastewater residuals management services. American Water Works Company, Inc. serves approximately 14 million people with drinking water, wastewater, and other water-related services in approximately 30 states and 2 Canadian provinces. The company was founded in 1886 and is headquartered in Voorhees, New Jersey.

American Water Works Company, Inc. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2013. For the quarter, the company reported operating revenues of $636,137,000 against $618,554,000 for the same period last year. Operating income was $164,233,000 against $159,738,000 for the same period last year. Income from continuing operations before income taxes was $88,811,000 against $84,645,000 for the same period last year. Income from continuing operations was $57,643,000 or $0.32 per diluted share against $49,252,000 or $0.28 per diluted share for the same period last year. This overall increase is mainly attributable to increased revenues from rate adjustments in recognition of needed infrastructure investments, and also from lower income tax expense due to a $3.3 million nonrecurring tax benefit. Capital expenditures were $213.1 million compared to $233.4 million for the same period in the prior year. Net income was $57,643,000 or $0.32 per diluted share against $41,754,000 or $0.24 per diluted share for the same period last year. Overall, operating revenues increased $17,600,000 with revenues from Regulated Business increasing $31,400,000 or 5.8% from 2012. This increase in revenues is primarily due to new rates in a number of hours subsidiaries with an impact of approximately $25,300,000. For the year 2013, the company's earnings are estimated to be in the range of $2.15 to $2.25 per share. The company anticipates investing approximately $950 million in construction and other capital projects in 2013 to help ensure reliable water and wastewater services.
American Water Works Company, Inc. announced that its Board of Directors increased its quarterly cash dividend payment from $0.25 to $0.28 per share, a 12% increase. This is the fifth consecutive year, since the company's IPO in April 2008, that the quarterly dividend has been raised. The increased dividend will be payable on June 3, 2013 to all shareholders of record as of May 24, 2013.
