bae systems plc (BA/) Key Developments

BAE Systems Completes Final Hull Section of Hms Prince of Wales

BAE Systems has completed the final section of the hull for the UK Royal Navy's second Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales. Dubbed Lower Block 02, the 6,000t section, which is set to be delivered to Rosyth, Scotland, will form the distinctive forward hull section of the aircraft's hull and was moved out of the shipyard on 2,000 wheels. After the expected structural completion by July 2016, HMS Prince of Wales will embark on sea trials in January 2019, followed by acceptance tests in August the same year. The latest move follows the christening of the first aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth and its successful first floating and undocking. The two 300m-long and 74m-wide vessels will boost sustained operations and can accommodate an air wing of up to 40 aircraft, as well as AgustaWestland AW101 Merlin HM2 multirole rotorcraft and Merlin HC4 amphibious support helicopters. However, the latest project was the final one undertaken by BAE Systems in Portsmouth, which ends its shipbuilding operations as part of previously agreed plans. The Portsmouth shipyard will be returned to the UK Ministry of Defence later this year.

BAE Wins $584 Million Shipbuilding Contract

BAE Systems is to build three ships for Britain's navy in a deal worth £348 million ($584 million, EUR 436 million). The three 'Offshore Patrol Vessels' would be used to combat terrorism, piracy and smuggling in the waters around Britain as well as protecting the country's interests abroad. The 90-metre (295 feet) vessels will be built at the contractor's facilities in the Scottish city of Glasgow.

BAE Systems and Cummins to Come Up with New Technology to Reduce Idling for Hybrid Transit Buses

Transit bus operators will now be able to save fuel and also reduce air and noise pollution due to a partnership between BAE Systems and Cummins. All buses in North America will now be equipped with Cummins ISB6.7 hybrid engines and BAE Systems' HybriDrive Series-E propulsion systems, which will employ engine start/stop when passengers board or disembark. This technology has already been tested on buses in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Metro Mineapolis in Minnesota. It is planned to be delivered to customers by later 2014 and will be developed and produced at BAE Systems' facility in Endicott, New York. The testing has proved that the start/stop mode helps in reducing engine idling time by up to 40%. This helps in saving fuel and creates a quieter environment for passengers at bus stops. During the engine shut-off mode, accessories such as air conditioning, power steering and air compressors remain operational.
