BASF SE Announces Executive Changes at South American Division

BASF SE announced that it has appointed Thomas Reineke as vice-president of Human Resources for the company's South American division. Reineke was HR head of BASF's paints, construction chemicals and performance products unit in Sao Paulo. He will replace Wagner Brunini, who will retire. Reineke holds a doctoral degree in law from the University of Freiburg and has been working at BASF for 10 years.

BASF Inaugurates Joint Lab with Unifying Concepts in Catalysis (UniCat) for Catalyst Research

BASF announced that it is to invest up to €6.4 million over five years in a €13 million laboratory together with the cluster of excellence Unifying Concepts in Catalysis (UniCat) to investigate catalytic processes for raw material change. The laboratory, called BasCat and based in the South Campus of Technical University (TU) in Berlin, will employ 17 scientists to research the principles of heterogeneous catalysis for raw material change. The new lab building was opened on July 9, 2014.

BASF Starts Up PA, PBT and TPU Expansions in China

BASF has reinforced its performance materials division with the start up of expansions in Pudong, Shanghai, which have raised the site's production capacity for polyamide (PA), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and thermoplastics polyurethane elastomers (TPU). BASF also announced an additional expansion to take place at its production facilities for microcellular polyurethane components in a move to take advantage of the automotive market in Asia. The PA and PBT expansions had started operations ahead of schedule. Capacity for these products has risen from a combined 45,000 tonnes/year to 100,000 tonnes/year. BASF hopes to take advantage of China's national New Urbanisation Plan 2014-2020, which will see 100m Chinese citizens moving from rural areas to towns, increasing the need for engineering plastics for transport, construction and electronics. The company's TPU expansion was driven by the group's desire to tap the growing markets of textile, footwear, transportation, wire and cable sheathing, among other industrial applications. The company did not provide capacity production information. BASF also announced an additional expansion for its microcellular polyurethane components production line, aiming to take advantage of the fast-growing automotive market in Asia Pacific. Completion of this expansion is scheduled to be finalised in 2015.
