BHP Billiton Plc, together with its subsidiaries, operates as a diversified natural resources company worldwide. The company is engaged in the exploration, development, and production of oil and gas; mining of metallurgical coal, thermal coal, copper, silver, lead, zinc, molybdenum, uranium, iron ore, and gold; mining and refining of bauxite into alumina, and smelting of alumina into aluminum metal; and mining and production of nickel products, manganese metal and alloys, as well as development of potash. It is also involved in the exploration, development, and production of hydrocarbons; and nickel mining smelting and refining, as well as provision of administrative services. BHP Billiton Plc sells its copper, uranium oxide, lead, and zinc concentrates to smelters; copper cathodes to wire, rod, and brass mills and casting plants; uranium oxide to electricity generating utilities; nickel products to specialty alloy, foundry, chemicals, and refractory material industries; metallurgical coal to steel producers; and energy coal to power stations, power generators, and industrial users. The company, formerly known as Billiton Plc, was incorporated in 1996 and is based in London, the United Kingdom. BHP Billiton Plc is a subsidiary of BHP Billiton Group.

BHP Billiton Cuts Jobs at WA Iron Ore Operations, Including Mount Whaleback in Pilbara

BHP Billiton has cut 170 jobs from its iron ore operations in WA. The company has confirmed some of the redundancies will be from its Mount Whaleback operation in the Pilbara. The company announced it would undertake every effort to redeploy staff where possible. BHP announced it was part of its plan to continue sustainable growth, whilst reducing company costs. The company said it regularly undertook efficiency reviews, looking at the size and structure of its workforce in relation to its productivity. The move comes after 100 jobs were cut from the miner's Perth headquarters last week.

X2 Resources To Reportedly Acquire BHP Billiton's Non-Core Assets

X2 Resources to pick up some of non-core assets of BHP Billiton plc (LSE:BLT). Mick Davis is seeking a loan of up to $8 billion from JPMorgan to help bankroll an acquisition of BHP Billiton non-core assets through his new private equity vehicle X2 Resources, according to The Sunday Times. He is reportedly in talks to strike a deal for up to $15 billion to buy some of the non-core assets BHP is looking to sell or spin-off under a demerger. The Sunday Times reported on April 27, 2014 that X2 made an offer for BHP’s thermal coal unit and is considering acquiring its aluminum, nickel and manganese operations.
