Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, S.A. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 2013. For the quarter, the company reported net interest income of EUR 3,623 million against EUR 3,594 million a year ago. Operating income was EUR 2,712 million against EUR 2,738 million a year ago. Income before tax was EUR 1,513 million against EUR 1,299 million a year ago. Net income from ongoing operations was EUR 1,118 million against EUR 1,076 million a year ago. Adjusted net attributable profit was EUR 865 million or EUR 0.16 per basic share against EUR 1,231 million or EUR 0.23 per basic share a year ago. Net attributable profit was EUR 1,734 million or EUR 0.31 per basic share against EUR 74.9 million or EUR 0.19 per basic share a year ago. Book value per share was EUR 8.55 against EUR 8.44% a year ago. ROE was 16.2% against 9.9% a year ago. ROA was 1.25% against 0.79% a year ago. Adjusted ROE was 8.1% against 12.2% a year ago. For the first quarter of 2013, the company reported impairment on financial assets (net) of EUR 1,376 million against EUR 1,085 million a year ago.

Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, S.A. announced that it will invest $3.5 billion in Mexico. The plan foresees a $1.5 billion investment in new technology for BBVA's Mexican unit BBVA Bancomer Mexico, a $1.3 billion investment to upgrade its bank branches, and a $700 million investment to revamp its corporate headquarters in Mexico City.

Iberdrola SA is seeking to sell its 50% stake in Corporación IBV, S.A. in year 2013. Iberdrola did not dispose of its shareholding in Corporacion IBV earlier, as the market conditions were not suitable for such a transaction. The book value of its shareholding stands at €70.6 million. The other shareholder of Corporación IBV, Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, S.A. also considers its 50% stake to be non-strategic and its shareholding values €135.5 million.
