BHP Billiton Limited, together with its subsidiaries, operates as a diversified natural resources company worldwide. The company explores for, develops, produces, and markets petroleum with operating assets located in the deep water Gulf of Mexico, onshore U.S., and Australia, as well as the United Kingdom, Trinidad and Tobago, and Pakistan; and holds potash exploration rights to approximately 14,500 square kilometers of prospective ground in the Saskatchewan potash basin in Canada. It also produces and supplies primary aluminium, alumina, nickel, and manganese ore and alloys; and produces and exports seaborne metallurgical coal and thermal coal. In addition, the company explores for and produces copper, silver, lead, uranium, zinc, and iron ore. It serves smelters; wire rod mills, brass mills, and casting plants; electricity generating utilities; stainless steel, specialty alloy, foundry, chemicals, and refractory material industries; steel producers; and power stations, power generators, and industrial users. The company was formerly known as BHP Limited and changed its name to BHP Billiton Limited in July 2001. The company was founded in 1860 and is headquartered in Melbourne, Australia. BHP Billiton Limited operates as a subsidiary of BHP Billiton Group.

BHP Billiton (ASX:BHP) and Anglo American plc (LSE:AAL) are in talks to sell portfolio of manganese assets in South Africa and Australia, Wall Street Journal reports.

BHP Considers The Sale Of Its Non Core Assets

BHP Billiton Limited (ASX:BHP) is considering the sale of almost all the business. Andrew Mackenzie, Chief Executive Officer of BHP will decide by end of 2014, whether to unload almost all of its assets and create a new listed company to sell those businesses off separately. It will allow selling key commodities such as copper, aluminum, manganese and nickel for less than 1% of its earnings. BHP has a history of spinning off noncore assets as it did with its steel business in 2002 and also announced a major shakeup of its noncore operations beginning with its Western Australian Nickel West business.

Six Bidders Reportedly Looking To Buy BHP'S Nickel West Unit

MMG Limited (SEHK:1208), Glencore Plc (LSE:GLEN), Sherritt International Corporation (TSX:S), X2 Resources LLP, Trafigura Beheer B.V., Jinchuan Group Co., Ltd. are looking to acquire Australian nickel unit from BHP Billiton Limited (ASX:BHP) the Australian Financial Review reported on July 6, 2014. The bidders are also doing due diligence on Nickel West, which could be worth as much as AUD 800 million, the newspaper said. Emily Perry spokeswoman of declined to comment on the report. Spokespeople for X2 Resources, Sherritt International, MMG and Jinchuan could not be reached for comment.
