BMW Begans Production of X1 at its Newly-Opened Factory in Brazil; Announces Directorate Changes

BMW has begun production of the X1 at its newly-opened factory in Brazil following a production start of 10 October 2014 for the 3-Series. BMW is investing EUR 200 million (USD 248.5 million) into the plant over the next several years, increasing capacity to 30,000 units. A body and paint shop is due by September 2015, and production will expand to include the MINI Countryman, BMW 1-Series hatchback, and X3, in addition to the 3-Series and X1. SWhile the Brazilian market has fallen in 2014, it remains the large in the South American region and has potential for growth. IHS Automotive forecasts BMW will reach nearly 15,000 units of production in 2015 and exceed the 30,000 mark in 2019. At that point, the 1-Series is forecast to see the high output at Araquari, accounting for nearly 34% of volume, followed by the 3-Series, X1, and X3. The MINI Countryman and BMW X2 combined are forecast to account for about 6% of the plant's total output. Separately, BMW has appointed Julian Negri Mallea as the new director of MINI in Brazil, replacing Nina Dragone, who is now BMW Brazil's director of product and marketing.
