BT Completes 250 Km Subsea Cable Project

BT announced that it has completed the deployment of a 250 kilometre submarine cable system that will help to bring high-speed broadband connectivity to the U.K.'s Highlands and Islands region. The cable system links 40 off-shore and mainland Scotland locations. It forms part of Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband's £410 million project to upgrade Scotland's broadband infrastructure. Of that sum, £146 million is being ploughed into improving connectivity in the Highlands and Islands region, which includes the £26.9 million subsea network.

BT Group plc Opens New Data Center in Colombia

BT Group plc announced the opening of a new data center, BT Naos, in Colombia. The new facility increases BT's hosted and managed networked IT services capacity to support local and global companies in Latin America. Through the Naos data centre, customers will benefit from BT's virtualized servers and storage capacity, or they can set up their own dedicated equipment in a secure and high performance environment. Customers can also be connected directly to BT's global network, bringing substantial cost savings and operational efficiencies. BT Naos is located in the Tocancipa Free Zone near the city of Bogota, and is the first in Colombia to receive Uptime Institute Tier IV Certification of Design Documents (fault tolerant). It is connected through superfast fibre broadband to the BT Nimbus centre, located in the Fontibon Free Zone to provide asset redundancy and business continuity between these data centres for all mission critical services and processes. Because both data centres are located in Free Zones, BT and its customers will be able to benefit from tax exemptions, which will make doing business more cost effective and enable investments to be made back into innovation and technology.

BT Group Launches BT for Life Sciences R&D Cloud Service in Japan

BT Group has launched BT for Life Sciences R&D, a cloud service designed to enable collaboration within the life sciences industry to enhance R&D productivity, in Japan. This service is aimed at allowing customers to comply with the industry's stringent security, regulatory and compliance requirements in a way that is suitable for many regulated applications a company may wish to deploy. Additionally, to further comply with personal privacy information regulations, this cloud service will be hosted in Japan and the data will stay in Japan unless the customer moves it somewhere else. Customers have complete control over where their applications run, where their data is stored and how the data moves between different countries. BT for Life Sciences R&D is developed as a secure and segregated platform for scientists in pharmaceutical, biotech, devices & diagnostics companies as well as in academia and government. This allows them to construct and orchestrate in silico workflows and data pipelines to identify new pharmaceutical targets and drug candidates. In addition, this platform enables research scientists to create global project groups and collaborate safely and securely via federated identity management and authentication tools on top of built-in secure sharing/social applications. This ecosystem allows the group to securely upload documents, share results and communicate via IM, voice, video or chat to analyse results in an environment that segments data and uses qualified hardware components and workflows specific to the pharmaceutical industry. The BT for Life Sciences R&D platform is supported by the BT Assure portfolio of security services. These allow BT to assist customers in designing data encryption, anonymization, risk management and resilience to meet their quality and regulatory requirements for the cloud environment. Customers will also benefit from BT Advise's professional services capabilities in terms of application selection and migration to Cloud, orchestration support, consulting services and design of Cloud environment elements.
