Bumi plc, through its subsidiaries, engages in the exploration, mining, and processing of coal and other minerals in Indonesia. The company primarily operates three mining areas, including Lati, Binungan, and Sambarata; and three other reserve locations in east Kalimantan, as well as operates seven coal mines in Kalimantan. It also has interests in two exploration-stage oil concessions in Yemen; the Batu Hijau copper and gold mine located in Sumbawa, as well as two gold, silver, and copper mining concessions in Sulawesi, Indonesia; and in the Dairi Project, a zinc/lead concession located in the Dairi regency of the province of North Sumatra. The company supplies coal to utility companies, coal trading companies, power plants, steel plants, and other industrial end-users principally in China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Thailand. Bumi plc is based in London, the United Kingdom.

Bumi plc announced that, in line with its stated intention of restructuring the plc Board, it has commenced the search for a new CFO. Scott Merrillees, the current CFO who is based in Indonesia, will focus on his role as CFO of Berau Coal and will not seek re-election at the company's 2012 AGM on June 26, 2013 at which time he will stand down as CFO of the company.
In line with the planned separation of Bumi plc from Indonesia's Bakrie Group and coal asset PT BUMI Resources Tbk., 10 Bumi Resources commissioners and directors have resigned, including Bumi plc Chairman Samin Tan, as Bumi Resources president commissioner, along with Commissioners Alexander Ramlie and Scott Merrillees. Also resigning from Bumi Resources were Edison Mawikere, Veronica Tampubolon, Eva Tarigan, Nenie Afwani, John Slack and Stefan White. The company announced a number of moves in its key Indonesian coal asset, PT Berau Coal Energy Tbk, including the resignation of President Director Rosan Roeslani and the appointment of Eko Budianto to take his place.
Bumi plc on February 21, 2013 appointed Sir Richard Gozney a nonexecutive director of the company with immediate effect. Nalin Rathod and Jean Mizrahi were removed as directors with immediate effect. In addition, nonexecutive director Graham Holdaway was selected to become a member of the nomination committee.
